Never really understood all that FPS 30/60 thing as long as its playable thats all that matters anyway most people will reserve judgement until the game is actually finished and released.

I saw that show with dominic diamond thats on bravo that had a head to head with mortal kombat vs street fighter 2

Street fighter 2 one of course but it was so close (life span sf2 got 52%).
In my opinion SF2 was a far far better game but there were people i knew who preferred MK.
Around the time those two games were released there was not much love then with people divided into two camps

I also think a lot of differences today are based on preferences of art style (and I'm not just talking about visuals, but the way a game is structured/presented overall).

The problem you have now though is that the internet is just one big stupid argumentative middle school playground.

And I can't quite understand how they gave SF2 52% lifespan if it's still going quite strong 15 years later, I don't see anyone around here playing Clay Fighters, but hey, tabloid games reviews eh?
In other news, Dominik Diamond has become quite fat. With an f.

As far as fps goes, the next gen of games consoles is more than powerful enough to be capable of 60fps and there's no real reason why new games should have bad framerates apart from over-ambitious graphics and slack coding. Sony and MS should really insist that games have a minimum 30 frames at all times and send them back to developers if they don't live up to the standard. After all, if a game looks bad on their machine, people say the machine sucks, as well as the game, so they should look after their own interests and not let juddery garbage onto the market, especially if it's a platform-exclusive title so there's no risk of losing revenue to the other version.

Sorry i meant it was a poll

52% thought SF2 had a better lifespan 48% voted for MK

            Mk won on graphics

Anyway when i first saw the title for this topic where's the love gone? My first thought was about games developers

One review for starfox adventures read like this
Plays well looks good but where is the love and the soul?.And i have to sort of agree

That's precisely why I'm so hungry for Shadow of the Colossus.

There are an awful lot of games that separate/distinguish themselves from each other, but you have to ask yourself... how many have an identity?

And I don't mean differentiation based on play mechanics, level design and whatever buzz word feature is hot at the moment.

There are remarkably few games that have a complete constructed sense of what they are. It's usually in those games that we encounter worlds that feel believable and complete.

Dunno if its been said but for me when i was a kid games were ridiculously expensive, think ?60 for a new snes game. Anyways, due to the fact i could only afford a game like every 4 months, i cherished what i got and made surei saw every aspect of the game. As such i learnt to experience the good and bad points of the game itself. Fast forward to now, i guess its age, as you get older you become more particular and fussy bout things cos you know what you want (well you think you do) Therefore repetition is not necessarily what you are after as you are not as easily pleased. That is why peeps tend to moan about things. Also it is always easier to criticise than to commend, as in reality, there are more negative aspects to life than possitive, that is the world we live in. Anyways, the fact we have more materialistic stuff now than back then makes you want even more from what you get. Thats why we moan, human nature. Easy way to sort it is to ignore what others think and do whatchu gotta do homie.............. hehe......

Oh yeh it is so different now. Then i would only get a game perhaps once every 4 months. They had to last me a long time. Also the fact that i was getting a game very rarely meant i was a lot more excited when i did get one

Now i have so many games i really doubt i give them the attention they need

I know man, I know... MGS3 was greath though

I remember saving all the cash I had when was younger so I could pick up a game every few months. The excitement, the anticipation and eventual first play was amazing. I still feel the same excitement when I get a new game, and love setting aside time from my normal routine to get a right good play.

Best memory was picking up Soul Blade on the PSOne... I had a massive smile on my face the whole way home on the bus reading the manual and then THAT intro movie kicked in... has there ever been a better intro movie??

Funnily enough I had the same smile on my face only recently when I was driving home with Tekken 5 sitting in my passenger seat.

For me, the love is most definitly still there !!

One of the things that baffles me is many gamers' (mainly the younger crowd) obsession with image, in that they wouldn't be caught dead playing a 'kiddie' game, or owning a particular system that's been deemed 'uncool' by their peers. Case in point: the Gamecube. I've seen posts on GameFAQs saying stuff to the effect of "OMG thats a GCN game! why dont you play something on XBOX? cuz thats better! Mario sucks, etc." Never mind if the game is any good; if it doesn't feature exploding heads or has an urban gangsta vibe to it, then it's automatically crap, or not 'mature' enough.
Maybe it's just me rose-tinted specs, but I remember when it didn't matter if a game was a cutesy platformer or a run n' gun game with lots of bodies flying everywhere. (or something close to it, given there were no GTA-style games in those days) If it was worth playing, we played it.
Then there's the console loyalty thing many of them have that borders on the fanatical at times. Now, we all have our favourite systems, devcos and games, but the "I hate console X because it was made by compny Y" attitude is somewhat puzzling to me. The ps2 seems to come under fire here, and I don't think it deserves much of the drubbing it gets. But that's just my opinion of course.
I don't remember the Amiga vs. ST or Snes vs, Megadrive debates being as bad as today's fanboy squabbles, but that might be my rose-tinted specs blurring my vision again.

                              It certainly was!!

Then you had the epic music playing throughout it with some slices of action, it all just looked too good to be true and it almost was as the game itself was a dream!!

For me, it's largely about exposure. As a few people have said already, the internet/press allows us to find out loads about a game before it is released. Can you resist looking? When you finally get said product you have massive expectations of it, plus you have seen what is in it and what to expect.

Killer7, Metroid Prime and Ico worked for me because not only are they amazingly atmospheric, but I didn't spoil myself by reading kegloads of previews etc - mainly because they were off my radar until I got them. I'm sure I have wrecked lots of games by expecting/reading too much (GT4/ Metroid Prime 2/ Burnout 3).

To be honest I have the same problem with films. Reviews and trailers give away way too much of the plot - frequently if I watch a trailer *after* seeing the film I see that it was showing scenes from the last 10 minutes and giving away important plot developments. This is one of the things I like about sites like ntsc-uk which have more integrity and dedication to the subject. People here know that you can wreck a game by giving stuff away, so they write in a way which minimises the spoilage.

Conclusion: Don't find out too much about your next game / film. Just pay your money and see what happens.
