    Jacked!

Inspired by a conversation a friend and I had last night; one thing that's always existed in any medium is plagiarism, and gaming is certainly no different. There are many titles that inspired less imaginative coders to literally steal those ideas in an attempt to pass them off as their own.

So, what you have to do then is think of an example of "a blatant jack" (to quote said friend). Games that have ripped off others. Include screenshots if you can... it's more fun that way.

Anyway, I'll start with a couple.

Mario Bros ----> Great Giana Sisters

A bit on an obvious one perhaps, but rip offs rarely get more blatant than that. Still, the game was a pleasing enough Mario substitute (kept me entertained when I was 12) and it did have an excellent loading tune.

    Gauntlet ----> Garrison

By the same company, no less! You just have to laugh.

OK, its your turn to think of some. Bonus points if you can think of any that weren't Rainbow Arts games!

So I don't get many points for comparing R-Type to Rainbow Arts' Katakis? Bum.

                Yeh that reminds me.
                Fighter's History.
                See you in court
Amazingly, Capcom lost, probably because judges at that time didn't have a clue about any of the technical reasons why they were sueing, even though great swathes of Data East's source code were exact copies of Capcom's.
I own the PCB, it's remarkably similar but to be honest only in ways that Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury are. It's not like FH is a sprite-hack of SF2 or anything as sinister. I think if Capcom had won the court battle it would have been a bad thing in general, although they deserved to win because of the source code implications. Data East are out of business now anyway, so I guess that things evened themselves out in the end.

a better example of the mario kart rip off would be Konami Krazy Racers or Wacky Wheels tho the next Crash Bandicoot Racing game involves 2 characters combining their powers... o_O :P

What was the game that Pyscho Fox on the Master System ripped off? I really loved that game (PF, that is), and I've love to see what it's paying homage to.

[EDIT:] Oh, and ditto in regards to Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

Alundra kind of jacks Zelda III, although is still a decent enough game.

One that stands out for me is Mario Golf 64. I had been a long time fan of Everybody's Golf (and still am - incredible game), and couldn't believe the similarities when I played Mario. OK I know the developers are the same, but to use the same game engine and controls is a tad lazy. Although I suppose if it a'int broke don't fix it comes to mind with golf games. Actually this post is a bit pointless. Sorry Ady.

Copied it, and bettered it to be fair. Well at least until number 4 came along in both cases!
