    Guys

Santa is bringing me a PSP in 2 months (jeso thats close!!!) and im having a wee investigation into what kinda games i want to have sitting waiting for him

My main bread and butter is the rpg format and ive not really seen much at all to be honest except tales of eternia which i couldnt suss if there would be a UK/US release of

Anyone know of any gems in the pipeline?

I think you might be a bit out of luck on that front. Japan seems to get loads of RPG's & SRPG's for the PSP but I have not seen much at all of note down for a western release.

Faced with high development costs with the PSP I really fail to see how a company cannot justify the small cost of license/translation of game rather than plowing the money into another action game turkey.

Dont quote me on this but it seems the DS has far far greater support for RPGS that the PSP, I can name:
      - Tingle RPG
      - Tales of
      - Final Fantasy III
      - Children of Mana
      - Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
      - Iron Feather
      - Lost Magic
      - A.S.H (Archaic Sealed Heart)
      - Deep Labyrinth
      - Mario and Luigi
      - Xenosaga I-II
      - Western Lords
      - Wizardy Asterisk
      - Contact
      - Azure Dreams
      - Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
      - Pokemon: Fushigi no Dungeon: Blue / Red Rescue Team
      - Tengai Makyou 2
      - Magical Vacation 2

The list goes on and on and on and on and on, maybe if RPG's are your thing the DS is more up your street.

there's always emulation on the PSP, older Zelda & Final Fantasy games take your fancy ... (assuming you own the originals of course)

Where have you been for the past month, Nintendo had a conference (somewhere?) and like a zillion games have been annouced for it

Square-Enix are supporting the DS nicely, as well as remaking Final Fantasy 3, creating a new FF:CC title, they're also doing Dragon Quest Monsters, Seiken Densetsu DS: Children of Mana, Egg Monster Hero and Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 2.

Even greater is the fact that there's reports that Capcom are making a Devil May Cry game in the same style as VJ for the DS

Not if you want to play new retail games. GTA is the start of a enforced (i.e. can't play unless you give up emu's) gaming. (OK, technically you can downgrade from 2.00 that GTA requires but the next games will _require_ 2.5 and theres no going back from there).

If rpgs are your thing, don't worry too much. Along with tales of eternia, next month (stateside) sees the release of kingdom of paradise and legend of heroes with Popolocrois due in December. That little lot should be more than enough for you up until at least the launch of FFVII:Crisis Core early 2006

not likely any time soon but the two guys that run bioware say they want to make games for the psp, one can only assume an rpg but this is most likely a fanciful dream that will NEVER HAPPEN

i don't know of any western rpgs 'cept eternia

i can recommend Lumines though, my favourite psp game (slightly off topic)

WHA...... I Bought a PSP mainly cause of this rumour (for the PSP obviously). dunno how it'd work with a DS though, makes more sense on the PSP.

Why should it make sense on the PSP opposed to the DS. They're changing the art direction to how Dante was in VJ allegidly. Then they're gonna do a carbon copy of DMC from the PS2 for the PSP. It'll feed both gamers needs I suppose one way or the other.

Ummm.... so RPGs on the PSP.

The western releases seem full of "action" RPGs, but you can emulate classics such as Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and Ultima games. There's also a number of ports being done: Princess Crown, Eiyuu Densetsu Gagharv Trilogy: Shiroki Majo, Suikoden I + II, Breath of Fire 3, Tales of Eternia, Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII (working title)

Upcoming new PSP games include: Untold Legends 2 (Warriors Code), Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, Monster Hunter Portable, Ys: The Ark Of Naphishtim, Kingdom of Paradise, PoPoLoCrois, Legend of Heros. Probably some others too.

There's a couple that look really good, mixing action RPG style with proper exploration free-roaming. But of course its always wait 'n see the final product.

There's bound to be some smart RPG's in time (what time i don't know), as they take aeons to produce (just look at FFXII and DW VIII).
Just look at how long the PS2 was out before we got a decent RPG over here (i think Dark Cloud was the first biggie?)

If only. Final Fantasy VII on the PSP (which it'd be a tight fit on UMD), with a few bells and whistles would be perfect. Cosying up in bed on a late night to play through one of the greatest adventures ever produced?

                              Yes please.
