WAB Version Changer for PSP - side effects?

The strangest thing happened with my PSP yesterday.

I received a UK copy of Virtua Tennis: World Tour for my PSP on Monday. As most of you already know, VT is one of a rapidly-increasing collection of PSP titles that come with in-built firmware upgraders (in this case, v1.52) insisting that you make the necessary upgrade to your PSP before you can play it.

Being slightly partial to my homebrew emulators, I declined to update my JPN v1.50 PSP, instead opting to download and use the WAB Version Changer (v2.0) in order to trick Virtua Tennis into thinking that my PSP was already v1.52. Everything seems to be running fine, Virtua Tennis working perfectly on my PSP with WAB.

Fast forward to Tuesday night - I'm in the middle of Career Mode on Virtua Tennis. I decide to call time on my gaming session, so I press the HOME button on my PSP - imagine my horror in discovering that the 'Do You Want To Quit This Game' screen is frozen, rendering me unable to go back to the main PSP menu unless I completely restart the machine!! Even worse, I find that when I press the hold down the screen brightness button to switch off the screen, pressing it again (or any other button) wouldn't switch the screen back on unless I switched the PSP off and on again!!

Slightly panicked, I revert back to v1.50 firmware, then I connect my PSP to my PC and erase the WAB version changer from my Memory Stick. I then decide to reboot the PSP completely by way of restoring the default settings via the main menu. I go to change my PSP nickname and find the type-pad function completely glitched, leaving me unable to properly type in anything!!

I was now totally spooked by this point. These 'glitches' remained on my PSP no matter how many times I restarted or rebooted it. I went through all of my game UMDs and the HOME/Screen problems still remained. I then gave up, convinced that I had screwed up my machine, and went to bed miserable.

Fast forward to this morning - I get out of bed and start up my PSP. I then loaded up my Spider-Man 2 movie UMD - it seems to be working perfectly. I then try my games and find to my surprise that all the glitches are gone - HOME button function working perfectly, SCREEN button functions working perfectly, type-pad function working fine, etc. My PSP is fully recovered and back to perfect working condition, so it would seem.

Needless to say, this incident has kind of sworn me off using firmware-tricking programs like WAB version changer in the future. I see myself as having two options - either I do away with the whole homebrew scene and upgrade my PSP to v2.50 firmware, or buy a 2nd (preferably Ceramic White) PSP.

What I want to know is, have any of the PSP owners on the forum had any similar problems with WAB Version Changer or other homebrew programs for that matter? Have the problems gone away or have they 'scarred' your PSPs?
Are you still for or against or undecided about homebrew on the PSP?

What do you guys think? Over to you...

LOL - How did I know somebody was going to say that?

In all honesty and seriousness, I did not dream any of this - it was all too real, mate. If I had dreamt this, there's no way that I would have wasted my time typing it up in the first place - I'm not that type of guy.

That said, I did have a dream once where my PSP fell apart in my hands!

All joking aside though, I'm 100% serious about this - I honestly thought that WAB Version Changer had damaged my PSP to a degree. I really can't see myself using any similar firmware-tricking programs in the future because of this. I know Homebrew can cause slight glitches on PSPs, but these are usually minor things like changing the time from 12 to 24-hour and vice-versa - something which is easily rectified when you exit a homebrew program on a PSP. This was totally different.

I genuinely want to know if anyone has had experiences along similar lines with Homebrew coding on their PSPs.

Hmm, you sure its WAB thats causing this? Only problems I've had is my PSP freezing once or twice in the middle of a Wipeout Race. Other than that its fine.

I've had mine freeze on the 'Do You Want To Quit This Game' screen a few times, nothing a cold reboot didn't cure though.

It must have been - I haven't had any other problems with other homebrew programs/emulators. What else would explain it?

And it would make sense if it was WAB that glitched my PSP - after all, when you use a version changer on a PSP you are manipulating the Firmware (essentially an Operating System, obviously) to some degree, be it a small or large one.

Cold Rebooting wasn't eliminating the glitches from my PSP, even when I used WAB to revert back to v1.50 and then cold-rebooted.

I think the only sure-fire way to avoid Sony forcing you to do what they want you to do is to buy two PSPs.

Also, why do you press Home before going into standby? I just pause the game and flick the switch.

Up until last night, I'd never had a problem with the HOME function on my PSP, and cold-rebooting wasn't eliminating the glitches from my PSP.

No particular reason, I guess. I don't do that all the time - I do pause and standby as well.

Besides, I just like to know that I have the choice. There's no crime in that, is there?

                      No course not.

Wipeout seems to be the only game of mine to freeze/get stuck also, but a power off and on cures it.

Lovely coffee brown wallpaper for November by the way isn't it.

HA! It always takes me ages to get used to the default wallpaper colours, by which time the month has passed and it then changes yet again.

Obviously, v2.00+ PSP owners don't suffer from this.

Back on topic, has anybody had their PSP exhibit any peculiar side-effects from any homebrew-related tomfoolery, or is it really just me?

It can't just be me, surely?

My PSP crashed when I played with some of the settings on the PSPGenesis emu to try and get Sonic working properly. Had to hold to the power button for ages to get it reset but apart from that no problems here.

Ohh you're having problems too? VT caused all kinds of crap with my PSP but I didn't want to mention it when I sold it to you as I just wanted rid of that damn game in fear that it would brick my PSP!

                              Only joking!
