PSYVARIAR
Looks in terms of bullet patterns a lot like mars matrix but the key difference is you have to get as close to the bullets as is humanly possible this creates a combo and this is why the game is so clever.
As im sure saur will tell you the amount of playtime in each level is huge i haven't stopped playing it for months the more you put in the more rewarding it is, it can be a pickup and play affair or a session.
DODONPACHI
Pure old school madness IMO, crazy bullet patterns hard hard hard gameplay, if you like any of the others then i would go with this, as its more of the same with nicer sprites.
There is deepness in there as well (as you can technically combo the entire level) but it's a LOT harder than Psyvariar also comes with a DVD showing a hand of god type playing through the whole thing without losing a life or using a bomb (certainly showed me up good and proper).
if i had to choose one i'd say psyvariar but, each one is very different in its style and execution.

In favour for Psyvariar is that you can play it in tate mode, which is a big plus in my book.
But even better and what gets me going is your description of DDP3: ?old school madness? and ?more of the same with nicer sprites?

Psyvariar isn't really like gigawing. It's about the feeling you get when you are levelling up and have a split second of invulnerability which allows you to smash through more bullets thus levelling up again and repeat. The first time I did it properly, my heart leapt into my throat. Was a great feeling.Comment

Psyvariar is simply one of the best, (if not the best!), shooters I've ever played!
It's so deep and yet so easy to just pick up and play.
The chaining is frantic and the levelling up is awesome. When you break your level or get a higher chain you feel on top of the world. Not many games out there give me this feeling and for this I am happy with Psyvariar!
As Destrukticor said, you can either just pick up and play it for a bit or have a session and find yourself on it all day.Comment

Apparently psyvariar is out somewhere around the 20th June PAL for 15 notes.
I cannot urge everyone on here if they even have an inkling of a like for shooters to buy this.
I borrowed mine for the longest time then brought one second hand off here.
Best money i ever spent on a PS2 game.
