    BBC gaming survey

Just browsing the tech page over on the BBC and noticed this:

    Some pretty interesting results.

I think the way they class a gamer as 'anyone who's played a game in the last six months' makes the whole thing pretty pointless. A quick game of Snake on a mobile phone in August, and you're a fully fledged gamer!

I agree - that seems to be the one flaw in the entire article.

Hmm. So that makes both my parents and my wife "gamers". They'd laugh in your face if you called them a gamer.

But if you look at the results most of the respondents seemed to class themselves as a 'heavy gamer'. I like their chuckie egg bar graphs!

Nice article though! The put some effort in with the gaming theme. It is interesting in that it shows the tastes of ANYONE that has picked up a game in the last 6 months. And that kind of research shows what people who hardly play games are after. I'm telling you, a Suduku release on DS would clean up in this country.

Define a 'gamer' then. Is there a certain number of hours per week, or maybe a number of titles owned. Casual players are here to stay now, revenue from them is enormous and will continue to grow, they have to be counted.

Yes, but I would hesitate to call someone who has played one game once in the last six months a 'gamer', even a casual one. Just as I wouldn't call someone who tried one cigarette a 'smoker'. There has to be a cut off.

That's all very good but the majority of the time the BBC can't write a games article and get the facts right to save their lives.

Hell yeah. We help keep the industry alive.
