    Hardware observationa

I have noticed this on two systems (a core and a premium) that there is a rattle type noise from the top of the unit (as in where the HD is). I even took the HD off my premium and it still happens. This occurs with both core and premium I have looked at and sounds like a loose screw type noise. Anyone noticed it? Only happens when moving the console about.

apparently that is the bearing which recognises whether you're console is vertical or horizontal and adjusts the ring of light accordingly.

      That's genius, really.
They could have just had it an selectable on the dashboard or something

Just want to check : Does everyone else get a massive change in noise level from the 360 when going from the dash into a game ? As soon as my system fires up the DVD drive it becomes far noisier, and goes from quite a pleasant sounding machine, to a really annoying bugger I've been presuming that it is just the noise caused by the high speed DVD drive, however I'm not sure if the two fans go into overdrive when you run a game as well !

Makes it impossible to enjoy a game at low volume to me, as the machine will drown the game out if it is down low. Not a major issue, but if you are using the machine while someone else is in the room, it is annoying for the person not playing !

            Same here.

The noise sounds like the fans rather than the disc drive, so I'm guessing the fans speed up when it's running something heavy duty like a game whereas the dash only uses a small percentage of the system resources and can therefore run much cooler.

Yeah I think you are right, but I have to say that the system is not the living room friendly device to me (when you are playing games / dvd's) that Allard suggested it would be !

It's the only problem I really have with the machine though, and I have to stress I would put up with alot more than that, to be enjoying all that the system is currently delivering !

PC GPU cards* work that way.

Low system load = low fan noise

High system load = 747 take off

                *Well my Nvidia anyway

Thinking about it though it has to be the drive !! As if you play the Kameo demo off the HDD the system remains at the same volume as it would in the standard dash board, but this demo must be pushing the cpu/gpu as per the other disk based games.

I have to say I'll be first in the queue to replace the DVD drive if it becomes a possibility ! Only drives I've heard which are this noisey are Laptop drives, and they are more understandable due to the space limitation within which they operate !

Do you think we will see people modding xboxes to reduce the noise?

Maybe better fans or liquid cooling. I am borrowing a system and have it laying down in a closed unit and the noise is annoying. The missus always complained that the original was too noisy to watch dvds with and the background hum gave her a headache, but this one is muct worse.

I was going to get my own in March but am thinking of waiting to see if theres a hardware revision of some type.

Any short term fixes I could try?

I'd agree that the DVD drive produces a ridiculous level of airy/whooshy noise when in action. I've never heard an optical drive anywhere near as bad. Seems a pretty lame and unnecessary place to slip up when it comes to the system's noise level, doesn?t it?

I'm pretty sure that its the fans cranking up the cooling for the HD 3d gaming action.

my dvd drives on my pc make as much noise as the 360s does, so i wouldnt worry, its normal
