Without the dubious virtues of having broadband, I've had to wait a wee while for the various mags to get around to shoving some of the E3 stuff onto their discs...
Christ, is it me or are gamers being taken for a complete load of ****-wits?
PS2 games...Sorry, out of the 50 or so 'games' I looked at, half were substanded racing games. True Crime looks like a vastly inferior GTA wannabe (and I didn't much care for GTA to be honest). Lucasarts have ballsed up one of my all time fave adventure games with the sequel to Full Throttle- just exactly why have they felt the need to do some lame arsed attempt at 3d characterisation...without any, erm, character? Sega's PS2 output borders on the pathetic. Sports games are all very well, but quite honestly, they're not doing anything that I haven't already done before.
Revolution's Ghost Hunter looks stunningly poor. I mean, do games designers have any idea at all about what is stylish? Or what might just make a good game? Hmm.
The only game which has got me relatively happy on the PS2 is MGS3...surprise, suprise. It might be a sequel (prequel?), but there's more artistic and design flair in Hideo Kojima's small pinky than in most other developer's output altogether.
Xbox- Slightly less depressing- but that's probably because not as many games seem to be being made for the thing.
Only a handful of highlights though- Knights of the Old Republic isn't looking quite as mouthwatering as it was a few months ago, but i have no doubt that it's going to be a good game. Fable looks decent enough- although from a graphical point of view, I still think the character animation look poor- kind of like Thunderbirds, but without the strings. Oh well.
However, Halo 2 is so obviously going to be the dog's dangly parts, it'd have probably been worth the ticket price to go to see that by itself. God bless Bungie- they don't rush the product, and give us only tantalising glimpses of what's going on, but you just know that the waiting will be worth it.
Gamecube? I'm going to reserve comment because, I haven't see (or maybe I haven't paid much attention...) to what's going on. I do like the look of Rogue Squadron 3- if only because I veer towards graphic whore-dom, and it seems to have done the impossible and improved on the graphics of it's predecessor and that can't be a bad thing...although, if they don't improve the slowdown problems, this might not be a good thing.
Oh, and the remake of Metal Gear Solid looks good enough...
Maybe I'm missing things, but apart from the obvious highlights, there's nothing that has caught my eye at all. I'm all for the increasing popularity and higher output of games to the public- but when almost everything you now see seems to be substandard, you've got to worry a little bit for the future.
Ooh, I forgot the PC- Yes, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex 2, Doom III all look wonderfully yummy... So that'll be all of 6 games that have sparked my interest then. Out of...how many?
Depressing.
And back I go to play Halo...
