360's 1st Year of Gaming (In Search for the 360 Killer App!?)

with Gears of War looking promising but just not like a "killer app" (mainly gameplay-wise, imo) and Halo 3 not even being officially announced yet (and probably not out before summer 2007), i am wondering what, let's say the first year of 360 gaming, is going to look like!?

though the 360's lunch line-up was pretty decent it could not motivate me to ged rid of at least 500 euros. and since there's left so much great games for my Xbox and also Black and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter coming early next year, i guess i can easily wait for the first real 360 "killer game". so what are the prospects here?

I suppose it depends on your favourite genre, for many I guess the killer app has arrived in the form of PGR3.

As for me, I had no interest in PGR2 so 3 would be ignored (i've gone off *real* driving simulators anyway).

For killer apps, to be honest the 1st half of 2006 with games supposed to be released, it is hard to pick one. Dead Rising is the standout game for me that I see being a potential killer app... I can't really put my finger on anything else. The new Splinter Cell is probably being released on the current gen as well so that doesn't really count..

Wait until E3. The PS2 suffered the same problem in the first few months of its life.

Thats the thing with really killer apps. They need the good fortune of a dash of a genius, a great team, and the right hardware all at the right time.

I think compared to most console launches, the likes of PGR3 (even if it's not my taste), RR6, Kameo, COD2, Condemned and the like are a pretty spiffy selection.

True, maybe there's no 'killer app'. I must admit I bought a 360 'just cuz'.

I've been surprised how much I'm enjoying my 360. I ordered one for no real reason, I guess I just like new toys. But since getting it I've spent a lot of time with it. I played through Kameo and Condemned, and am now playing Kong. Geometry Wars and Mutant Storm on Xbox Live Arcade are fabulous, and with a huge list of developers signed on for arcade development who knows what delights we have in store.

It's true the system doesn't have a killer-app, but it does have a good selection of AA games, and with many more in the pipeline. Look at the first half of next year - Dead Rising, Splinter Cell 4, Alan Wake, Ghost Recon, Top Spin 2, Oblivion, Test Drive Unlimited, DOA4, and Chrome Hounds. More solid AA games.

Halo 3 may well be the killer app, but we will have to wait until PS3 release day for that one.... whenever that will be.

Yeah there might not have been a Halo or Mario 64 "killer app" but its been a great launch for me. I loved CoD2 (though for me at least its not an experience I'll repeat) and PGR3. The only let down has been PDZ which I just can't get into.

i'll second that. i love the 360 and so far the games are great. However PDO is a real letdown. if it wasn't for a cool online mode (and Call Of Duty having a ****e one) it would have to be one of the biggest letdowns ever!

                        I really hate the term `killer app`.

To me it's impossible for one game to `make` a system and I've always thought using the term in relation to consoles is a bit pointless.

While I've finally been swayed into buying a console after seeing one game (like RE:Remake for GC) each and every time it's never been the game that I ultimately though was the best ever for that system.

Trying to define just one game that is `the` must own title for a console these days is impossible. You've all seen the wide variety of opinions on these boards about games that some love but others hate. One man's feast is another man's famine.

For me COD II is a Killer App.

But I reckon FromSoftware Cromehounds is going to the true AAA game and Killer App for the 360.

The killer-app at the moment is blatently Xbox Live Arcade.

Oblivion is the big game though.

I reckon Ghost Recon: Advanced warfighter will take live by storm upon release. Its the reason i bought a 360.
