Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition difficulty.

I just watched the video review for this at gamespot and the guy said that the game is ALOT easier than the normal version, no matter what difficulty its set at. I havent played the US version but I didn't think it was suppose to be THAT much harder than the Japanese or PAL versions so it makes me wonder if the game has been made easier than it was originally meant to be.

Can anyone confirm this? becuase I was gonna buy it but thought the PAL version of the normal game was pretty easy as it was so this has put me off the special edition a bit.

I'm a bit confused about this as well, having just re-bought a PS2 mainly to play this. Maybe it's just because the guy reviewing it has played through the original version already so found it easier than a newcomer would? 1up's review seems to suggest that all they've done is try to cut down on the artificial difficulty spikes, which sounds like it can only be a good thing to me.

Dante Must Die mode is still there, isn't it? I'm sure that won't have changed.

DMD is where it's at. You don't need to play the game on any other difficulty if you think they're easy. DMD will make you cry!

          And here's your answer:

Apparently, it was also a good idea to bring about acute arthritic finger bone attacks about 50-years too early... or at least, that's what the back of the box would have you believe. In all actuality, DMC3 is surprisingly easier than it was before. This is because the advertised "Very Hard" Mode is just the renamed Hard Mode that had previously been exclusive to U.S. versions of the game -- while Normal is now the equivalent of the last game's Easy setting. Surprising, but true.

For whatever reason, the "normal" difficulty in the original US version was equivalent to the unlockable "hard" difficulty of the Japanese version. But now, the "normal" difficulty is equivalent to last year's easy setting. Combine the new gold orb continue system and the now-reasonable default difficulty level, and you've got a game that's still pretty tough in spots, but nowhere near as off-the-deep-end as the original US version. If you still end up having trouble, you'll unlock an easy difficulty mode after dying a few times, and this setting is true to its name--it's a whole lot easier than the dubiously named "easy" mode in the original release, especially when combined with the new continue option. Multiple tougher difficulty modes are also made available as you successively finish the game, including a supposedly new "very hard" mode that's really just a new label for last year's game's hard mode. So fans expecting an even stiffer challenge probably won't find what they're looking for here.
So if you want a new challenge forget it.

If you struggled with DMC3 before and want to complete it now, then this may be worth a shot.

I'm in two minds, I'd like the more challenging version but without the apparently annoying save system.. Can't have my cake and eat it then, obviously. God knows why they couldn't have just added more difficulties rather than just mixing them up.

In terms of difficulty it will the same as the original. The names have changed, that is all!

Theres nothing really wrong with the orginal save system and I thought it was the contiinue system they had changed? Which was fine too in my book as it was just like Devil May Cry continues have always been and should be and only added (fairly) to the challenge.

Not according to the reviews.... By the sounds of it they have just made them all easier, not changed them round.

But lets face it, I bet half of em' didn't even go near DMD mode since there doesn't seem to be any mention of it.

DMD mode is unlocked after multiple playthroughs considering the ammount of time most people will have sopent playing the first one, it will be a while before they get to DMD mode again for this. (unless your save file for the original version unlocks it stright away, in which case why wouldnt reviewers have tried it?)

Either Way, most people will play on normal first and if its easier then it wont be that much fun... I havent played the game for a while, going stright to DMD I'd just get my arse kicked and give up.

Because they're bloody wimps! The lot of em'

I prefer the First Play thread here than anything GS or IGN throw up as a review cause least I know the manz here will be rinsing it - on all difficulties.

Besides, Capcom wouldn't deprive us. They us too much!

Well either way I'll be rinsing this when I get my copy in a few days on DMD.

Exactly. That same guy on Gamespot complained about DMC3 being too difficult on Normal! It's not the type of game where you can master it in one sitting. Think of SF2. Was it difficult at first with its six buttons and fireball/dragon punch motions? DMC is exactly the same. You just NEED to put time into it.
