Games that you did not see the potential off when first played

Happened to me far to often think the first was gun valkirie.Did not really enjoy it when i first played it thought the controls were to hard and could not see the reward for trying to master it.Then i saw the opening play vid where the person keeps in the air for most of the level. Then i understood what the game was about.

Another one was psyvariar first played it thought this was pretty lousy with a buzz gimmick. But thought i would search for it on the net came across saurions vids (think it was how i found this site actually).Again i realized what the game was about and soon got addicted.

Think the most recent one was jo jos bizzare adventures.Saw some match vids which had some insane combos its compelled me to play it now

    Any more games?

    Definitley 3rdt Strike.

Thought it was yet another SF2 clone with generic fighters.

Really got into it recently and learn something new every day. the game is so damn deep it's scary...

Fancy explaining it to me then? Coz I'm sort of down with it, then it gets silly where you have to do all that floating and shooting and clicking the sticks in and it all gets a bit fiddly and frustrating when they could have made the controls that much more intuitive and avoided all that crap.

Kameo. I played it for 5 minutes, thought WTF? and put it on the shelf.

I don't think i'll be alone in this assessment - Ikaruga. When i first played it i though "wow, great lookin game, buts whats with this colour switching nonsense". It tooka couple of hours and a bit of f.a.q reading to finally grasp its concept and then BOOM! i was hooked.

Similar but less so with Border Down.

            Rez

            SF3: TS

I thought Goldeneye was impressively **** at first play, then shelved it for 7 days before going back.

              NiGHTS was another.

I remember seeing the Street Fighter 3: New Generation cab for the first time and giving it a play.

                  Who are these crap characters?
                  Only one super move?
                  Parrying is pointless.

And promptly went back to Zero 2.

Never played it again until I got the Dreamcast version and it all suddenly made sense. Moreso when I found Third Strike.

Bangai-o - thought it was an utterly annoying pile of crap when I first played it, then I realised it is all about the size of your explosion - and since then it is wheeled out on a regular basis.

I also thought GoldenEye was crap the first time I fired it up, which was very strange in that almost every game I've ever bought, I've always liked (at least initially), but with GE I was instantly turned off. But once I reached Facility, level 2, everything changed and I was hooked.

Ironic isn't the word, as I subsequently played it non-stop for the next 3 years and it became my most played game of all time.

Yeah, same here. I had heard about it being a good game, but never bothered to check up on it's mechanics as I thought it'd be a standard affair.

Many, many games. Even games where they exact opposite is true. A recent one that springs to mind though is Richard Burns Rally. What a pile of crap... even said so in the feedback thread after NTSC reviewed it. I just didn't understand why it got a glowing review. That was until I played it with a steering wheel and got a proper version to go on and now, it is one of the best rallying sims I've ever played.
