I was just thinking, after looking at the Oblivion and SOTC threads and all the great discussion and enthusiasm within them, what is our reasons as gamers for loving these games?
Is it the true escapism offered in them, the opportunity to immerese oneself (temporarily) in surroundings that are unachievable in everyday life? Or is it just a manifestation of one's desire for a bit of fun?
It would seem to be a combination of the two, that we play them for fun AND escapism. For me personally I do not play these types of games exclusively, as I love other genres of games. But these games, with their own stunningly detailed worlds, offer something that not even a good book can give you, the freedom to go where you want when you want.
This post is rambling a bit now, and I am aware that it is probably too similar to the thread about soul in games, but I guess what I was interested in finding out is what is our reasons for liking these types of games. Is it because of an inherent dissatisfaction with everyday reality, or is that too negative and cynical a approach to take, and we instead just want a bit of fun.
