Generally, I hate first person shooters, but....

I like the look of that Black, and over the years have enjoyed a few FPS games, namely the original Medal Of Honour on PS1, Goldeneye, and the lovely Metroid Prime. I am generally more of an arcade gameplay kinda guy, with an emphasis on fun and less on realism or organising squads of soldiers and all that guff.

I don't own an Xbox, and never will, and I refuse to play games on the PC apart from Football Manager.

So - can anyone recommend me any FPS on the PS2, GC or even PS1 they think I may like?

p.s. when I see a cheapo copy then will be getting Black

sorry mate but the quality of FPS on the PS2 is pretty dismal, you'll really need an xbox in all honesty.

Black's alright, a decent arcade shooter with a few flaws but still competent enough to be the best of it's type on PS2. Killzone is distinctly average,as is project snowblind, judge dredd, mace griffin e.t.c...however the original Medal of Honor Frontline is decent enough, Area 51 is competent enough,Red Faction 1 is a good laugh if you're into arcadey shooters and the Total Recall storyline is entertaining, steer clear of Red Faction II though - it's a horrible mess. Never liked any of the Timesplitters games,(can't deal with the floaty aiming and lack of jump) though #3 might be worth a punt if you're after pure arcadeness. I've heard Cold Winter is good, but have never played it.

Pick up a cheapo xbox on the t'other hand and enjoy

    Far Cry Instincts
    Halo 1/2
    Unreal Championship 2
Half Life 2 (only if your PC is crap, mind!!!)
    Doom 3 + Expansion
    Men of Valor
    Return to Wolfenstein
Serious Sam 1/2 (perfect arcade action)
Painkiller is just round the corner and that to me is the best of arcadey FPS.

I think Serious Sam is your best bet(on the PS2). You just have wave after wave of monsters coming at you, and you've got weapons to blast them with. Simple.

Ooh, Serious Sam : Next Encounter on the Cube is alright and a lot better than the PS2 version, PS1-wise the Quake 2 port was excellent, and there's a title called 'Disruptor' which was absolutely excellent but hugely overlooked.

There aren't many truly classic (if any) first-person shooters on the PS2.

With Halo, Halo 2, Stranger's Wrath, Chronicles of Riddick, Far Cry Instincts, Doom III and Half-Life 2, a second hand Xbox is your best bet.

If you're into abstraction over realism, then you'll probably enjoy Stranger's Wrath and Half-Life 2 a lot.

Similar to how the Xbox suffers in the RPG department, the PS2 doesn't have huge expanse of brilliantly made fps titles available.

Agreed, Disruptor and Quake 2 are tops on PS1. Also Doom and Final Doom are worth checking out. Oh and Exhumed on the Saturn is ace (think it had an inferior PS1 port).

There was a Psygnosis adventure first-person based game on the PSone set on a space station that was released a few years ago which sounded interesting. It got a few bad reviews, but they seemed to be in the vein of the reception Shadow of Memories received, i.e. the game was criticised for something it wasn't aiming to be. Forgotten the name though.

I like how you make a comment on the PS2 and then say half the games on it are kind of OK and then go on to list some dodgy Xbox titles There's little difference in hardware, many games are essentially the same despite things like Dualshock vs. Controller-S. Many Xbox titles are rudimentary, you'd be better off playing FPS games on your PC unless you're after something... a little different. Others are recommended stuff outside of your parameters, I can too

Timesplitters (any of them, FP coming highly recommended) is a good franchise, perfect arcade FPS action that is similar to Goldeneye. Many nods in its general direction too. I'm sure you're aware it is from the same development outlet (well, team, mostly). Can be had for two for a fiver in GAME, I think. Deus Ex is also pretty darn nice although a mixture of RPG-come-FPS action. In fact, the FPS side of things is a little weak but the game more than makes up for it in the level of immersion given to the player, the ability to **** things around a bit. Black is a perfect arcade title too, doesn't require much thought which is spot on.

Killzone is pretty decent, or at least I thought it was. Maybe frowned upon due to its hype but it is a nice little game regardless. Maybe not quite your bag though. Another that can be had fairly cheaply. Plenty of Soldier of Fortune, Rainbow Six, Medal of Honour and Ghost Recon games 'n' clones to be had too [on the PS2].

If you want mindless action though, how about this?

With Killzone, everything I've found fault with Black for is present tenfold with added framerate issues though, so I'd recommend getting Black instead. Deus Ex really deserves to be played on a PC, and it's so old that you'd be pushed to find a machine incapable of playing it. If you really do need a PS2 FPS, and don't want to spend ?30 on Black, then something Timesplitters is really the best way to go by far.

The only fps games i have really played on a console are halo for the xbox goldeneye/perfect dark for the n64 doom for the psone and snes.

lately i have really got bored of the standard identikit FPS games we have been getting (like the medal of honour series) even half life 2 i was underwhelmed

i do have to admit though when i saw the footage and destruction in black it did raise my intrest but i will think i will wait and get it cheap

I recently picked up Cold Winter for the PS2 off Play for 6 quid and had a really good time with it. Well worth it imo. Nice and easy as well which is good.

I've just finished playing through Call of Duty 2 Big Red One on the PS2 and enjoyed it lots. Mindless shooting with some decent scenarios and none of the squad tactics needed in Brothers in Arms.
