    F.A.O 480p 360 PWNers

I've only just realised I've been running my Xbox360 at 50 hertz rather than 60 hertz!

Pretty easy mistake if your running progressive or HD modes as it wont give you the option to change to Pal 60 on the console settings unless you set your component cable to Standard Definition or plug in a non HD lead.

Anyway, now I'm playing games at 480p 60 hertz rather than 50 hertz and Geometry Wars has turned into a completely different game! It is so noticably faster it's become even harder to play but I'm loving it even more. I can't get anywhere near my 1.5m score at the moment.

I haven't noticed any difference in speed for any other games but the only other games I've played since changing to pal 60 are new, so haven't been tested in 50 hertz.

Dunno about high def, does it auto boot 60 hertz? 480p definately does not.

Alot of people need to check their video settings a.s.a.p !!

When you run in 720p/1080i mode, there's no '50Hz' option at all, it's 60Hz all the way.

The only exception is when you try to plan 50Hz XBox1 games, it then reverts to 720p 50Hz.

    In fact, I didn't think the machine could do 480p 50Hz - you sure you don't mean 480i 50Hz?

I know there's no option. As I just said, the option only becomes available when you have a non HD lead in. But it is auto set to PAL 50. You have to manually change it to Pal 60. Is it really auto booting in 60 hertz in HD modes? I can't test this but I know for a fact that 480p doesn't auto boot 60hertz. You have to select it through console settings (which obviously wont show the option until you switch to standard def mode).

That's suggesting you were running 720p 50 hertz previously unless The Outfit demo is bugged out.

As far as I know, the 360 in HD mode only supports the following -

            576p 50Hz
            480p 60Hz
            720p 60Hz
            1080i 60Hz

There is no 480p 50Hz standard, 576p 50Hz is the equivelent standard. When I first turned on my 360, that's what I was running at.

Ignore what The Outfit demo said, it said that even with my machine running in 720p 60Hz - it's just dumb and only checks your SD settings.

You cannot set the 360 to 720p 50Hz, except for when running 50Hz XBox1 games.

No offence man, but I think your not getting what I'm trying to say. Im suggesting that it automatically boots 50 hertz until you set it to 60 hertz. Your not setting it yourself.

I know that I was previously running 480p at 50 hertz. If you still have your component cable you can test this yourself by playing Geometry Wars. Whether this is the same for HD modes, I don't know.

There's no such thing as 480 lines at 50hz is there? (As far as HDTV resolutions/modes are concerned).

You sure it wasn't running at 576p 50Hz? As that's the European equivelent of 480p.
Not saying your wrong, as I've never seen what your machine was running at first hand, but my machine, on initial boot, ran at 576p 50Hz. I've never seen any instance of 480p 50Hz.

Yeah my mistake, meant 576p 50hz.

I'm absolutely positive that it is running at 576p, the european equivelent. When I say 480p I am going by the console settings as that is what is displayed.

Sorry, guess I should have said that, however I would have thought that was pretty irrelevent to my original point.

Jake, he means when you flick the cable switch to SD, and use 480p in the config, you still have the option of using 50Hz.

Seems to just be a big misunderstanding... since he stated 480p, I took it as-is.

Nevermind, seems sorted now! Must be said, I didn't realise my machine was running at 576p 50Hz on first boot until I bothered to check what the TV said - the console doesn't tell you anything!

That's what I mean. Alot of people will still be playing in 576p 50hz and not even realize! It's almost like cheating if your playing a game like Geometry wars!

My TV states the output in the top right corner when you boot up, but other than that I'd agree. The 360 itself could be running in 50Hz or 60Hz (non-HD) and most people would be none the wiser.

Ok, here's the thing. All HD/Progressive modes for 360 games are 60Hz. There's the odd PAL Xbox game in compatability mode that'll kick it into 50Hz, but otherwise it's 60 only.

Some games, however, seem to be checking the 50Hz/60Hz setting in the dashboard, even if it's in HD. (which means 60Hz)

So for things like The Outfit; your X360 is still running in 60Hz if it's in HD, but because your dashboard doesn't have the SDTV set to 60Hz, it thinks it's in 50.

Poses more of an issue for VGA owners really, as it can only run in 60Hz, with one exception. Playing DVDs will still kick it into 50Hz, which at least 90% of VGA displays will not support. Due to this, it will not let you play PAL Halo or Splinter Cell over the VGA cable; I can only assume DVD playback working is a bug.

I wish they had a "does your display support 50Hz" option for VGA users, similar to the 60Hz one for all other cables though - my Sony LCD does support it, and I'd love to play Halo in 720p over VGA.
