    What's got to go?

Over the next year or 2 when all the new wave of consoles are in full flow, what do you think we should finally see the back of?
One thing that really bugs me the most is backtracking, I can't stand it, I think it's lazy and really ruins a lot of games for me as I usually never return to them after completion. Some say Half Life 2 was linear, but at least there was little or no backtracking, you were led through set peice after set peice and didn't have chance to get bored, a wonderful experience and how more games should be.
Other personal pet hates are repetition of corridoors, repetition of corridoors.*

And I hope we finally see the end to dodgy/misleading FMV.

    *See what I did there.

No 60hz option. This should have been standard with the current gen but all 3 consoles were guilty of not providing 60hz to varying extents (with the PS2 easily being the poorest).

Region coding I would like gone too.

Stupidly long loading times for one, but my greatest problem HAS to be the issue of ports *shudders*

      EA/Neversoft I look at YOU!

If developers want to make the cross platform leap with their games, they should either release the game on the strongest platform at a budget price or go the extra mile and revamp the game engine - I'm pretty certain the cost involved with pushing out GUN on the 360 was minimal.

For me, unlikely to happen, but annoys the piss out of me.

        Indestructible. Wooden. Doors.

I'm armed with a behemouth of a weapon. Oh look, this frail looking wooden door manages to withstand a blast that would render a large building to rubble.

          Enemies that spawn from nowhere.

I'm looking primarily at you Perfect Dark Zero.

            Long and inappropriate load times.

I can handle one long load time at the start of a game if that is the only one you experience during play. But to have to sit through loading screens continuously is plain bad programming.

San Andreas, Halo2, Strangers Wath all managed it and where pretty to boot so how come in Quake 4 I had to sit through almost a minute of load time everytime I die sometimes to be moved only a few meters down a corridor, back to the shop that went. Even half-life 2 almost came a cropper with its constant breaks. Sort it out, I want intruption free gaming with very little down time.

triggered events - such a pain in the arse.

games on the Xbox are the worst culprits - as soon as you hear the HDD grinding a wee bit you just know some mad-arse monster/ninja/hoola girl/bampot is going to appear. while the loading times where a royal pain in the backside, HL2 at least had the foresight in design to already place the enemies in the level, rather than have them appear as if by magic as soon as you walk past Car A or Barrel B.

I would like to have seen the back of 30fps... With every new generation there is a glimmer of hope that we might get back to the 60fps glory days of the Mega Drive and SNES, but every time they let me down.

                  Poor show.

                      Voiceovers:

I hate them due to the fact that most of the time there done poorly. Developers have got to look at a game such as Jak and Daxter, IMO the voiceovers in this game were just about perfect: the animation of the characters faces sync well to the voices used, plus the voices for each character sound spot on and didn't sound like it was being read off a script. Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts to name a couple are criminal.

                      Western BoxArt:

Marketing men at publishers who think there doing something smart when they decide to change the boxart of a Japanese game to suit the western culture. Don't, leave it the **** alone.

                      CGI Cut Scenes:

I don't mind them when there short and sweet, but when the scenes run for as long as the game itself, happen every 5 minutes with usually poor voiceovers it just becomes a) really annoying and b) runes what could be an excellent game. Metal Gear Solid, wank, wank, wank.

                      Narrative:

IMO this is one area where videogames fall flat on there arse! There to many games out there with **** plots to them. I'd love to see this area improved (a lot) over the next couple of year. Sources of inspiration for the developer has to be: Deus Ex, Shadowrun and Final Fantasy VII.

                      Licenced Games:

Either do the licence proud (N64 Goldeneye) or don't even bother developing the game at all (to many to mention).

                      ---------

It would be nice to see some of the above changed over the next two years, but i don't think i'll happen anytime soon.

AMEN to that Voiceovers really are terrible in just about every game i can think of, and hell yes FFX is THE worst.

As long as magazines continue to knock points off because you can see some sort of end credits in less than 10 hours, and add extra ones if it takes over 20, then you're still going to get backtracking to pad that out.
