    Letting go of gaming kit

i'm torn... i've got some gaming kit i don't use and have little intention of using in the future so i'm thinking of selling it off, part of me can't for some perverse reason.

my pal samba boxset hasn't been used in a year or so, i haven't even got my dreamcast set up, the maracas aren't even at my house so why is it so difficult to just let them go? why am i so attached to a set of plastic maracas??

i'm not a collector, i just picked these up on release as the game looked suitably insane, they're pretty much the only 'rare' i own but why are these still in my posession? anyone else find it hard to get rid of kit? i think i'm worried they won't go to a good loving home...

You'll regret it. Put em in the loft and forget about em until the one day in the future when you WILL decide you need to play again.

Im in the same place as you crisp and although this sounds silly its actually quite a difficult position!!
I have a JPN PS2 that was imported at great cost on the 1st week of release, with it I a load of good shooters(dodonpachi, espgaluda etc, weird bits like motion gravure, tokyo bus guide, mad maestro and I rarely play em,occaisionally I will play a bit of rez.)
        Thing is I got a back room full of the stuff,I know if I flog the PS2 stuff I'd probably get some decent cash but I also worry about how I feel when it's gone!!I'd probably end up buying all back at some point in the future:{
As for putting it in the cupboard and bringing it out at a later date,it doesnt work,i've got a cupboard with snes,megadrive,n64,dc,steel battalion, countless games that rarely get touched, all gathering dust.
I'm coming to a decision about this,i'm going to flip a coin and go with the result,if you just sit and think about it it will never happen

that's the thing, the only time i've EVER played samba is in the first few weeks of buying it (and hammering it getting all the tracks) and the rare occasion that anyone comes around and asks about it.

hmm, i shall ponder this some more i think. other games and stuff i just get rid of when not using it, this is slightly harder than usual.

Keep it buddy - it won't be worth what you get for it.

In a few years when you're showing your kids a slice of "what gaming was like when Daddy was a young thing " then you'll be looking to pull out those maracas and give 'em a good shake - Of course, being older and through the eyes of a kid you will look like a complete penis but that's all part of it

Keep it. I wanna have another go when I come round, naked this time.

I sold all my Neo carts a few years ago in order to afford a lovely Gibson Les Paul I bought off of ebay when I was totally skint - only just rebuilt it all, and I'm still missing a couple of games.

Are you coming on Burners tonight? Dave has had a baby girl, well, his misses has anyway - even the birth of his first child wasn't enough to pull him away from online 209mph through Motor City.

The thought of me having kids is totally obsurd - it should happen, but probably won't.

sell it man. if you can get a good price for it, that is.

the easiest way to let go of stuff is to just bite the bullet and go "right i'm sticking you on ntsc-uk, mister! paypal OR bank xfer!!!"

i do it all the time. mind you it's easy for me as i don't really care about gaming stuff anymore. a lot of gamer friends are bewildered at how easily i let go of stuff, but i really don't feel anything.

the only things i've sold and rebought over the years are my saturn and dreamcast consoles. i've hardly ever sold a game only to buy it again. consoles - yeah, games - nope. but then i don't collect so i can totally understand holding on to things from a collector's p.o.v, and also i never spend big money on gaming artifacts (average for games is about a ?10-20, the only games i've bought for more than that are timesplitters2 on ps2 for the full ?39.99 and marvel vs sf on saturn w/ram for ?45) so i've hardly ever sold something at a substantial loss...

as for educating your kids, well, i'm a firm believer in letting them learn most of it for themselves. my dad never introduced me to streetfighter or shenmue - he plays stuff like f1 and rts games - but he DID introduce me to the idea of console emulation when we first got the internet (he's the one who stumbled across 'backyard emulation links' which remained in our favourites list for years). i'm not implying that i wouldn't have found out about it myself - it's just my way of showing how cool my dad is (he's nearly 50 so that probably puts things in perspective)

I just traded a pretty big chunk of my gaming collection for my 360, because that's what it was. A collection. Nothing super rare, but a few things I was holding onto as things that look nice on my shelf (Wonderswan stuff, Vagrant Story, Pocket Fighter, stuff like that), rather than things I'll actually play.

Managed to only get rid of stuff I'm never going to play again and made enough in trade and cash to get a 360 and GRAW. Because I didn't put any "real money" into it I can totally justify the cost of the 360, which I couldn't otherwise.

Plus I've got this nice warm glow thinking that some young gamer's going to be enjoying the games I'm not. I'm giving something back to teh community.

I've gone off the collecting thing, I used to keep almost everything and seek out other rarities, but now, cha ching. It gets traded as soon as I've finished, there are WAY to many new games tp worry about playing old ones. Not being able to let go of Halo 2 after playing it solidly for a year was bad enough.

Get rid of them. I sold mine a few years ago and haven't once regretted it.

I am in the same position. I have a Dreamcast collection that is currently getting no love and I am at a stage in my life where I just want to get rid of all of the clutter that is in my life. If the revolution gets the Dreamcast back catalogue I would definately sell up just so that I can have one machine that plays the games I love.

Samba Maracas are heart breaking to own when there is no body to share the fun with . All of my friends are far to sensible to play.

i guess if you sold your collection to fund some new, samba-loving friends, that'd be neither here nor there then, as you'd have no sambas in that case

Samba Maracas - I say keep 'em, unless you genuinely never use them. It also depends on what they're worth. Are you saving up for something huge?

I'm selling my 1 of 200 Silver limited edition Dreamcast. It seems the right thing to do because I need the cash for a really nice new LCD display, and the DC has spent most of its life in its box because I'm afraid of scratching it. Truth be told, selling my old PAL Dreamcast that I'd had since I was 13 felt more wrong, but only just. To me the memories I have of playing Shenmue at Christmas and all those hours of Phantasy Star Online are more important than the console itself.

But remember, I bought the thing back when I was really down. I'd just bought a PS2 and then after a month realised it just wasn't for me. I thought, what the hell am I doing, I've never liked PS2 stuff, this isn't me at all. So I worked out that I could get rid of the PS2 and games for a price similar to what the Limited Edition DC cost me. But as for now, I'm anything but depressed (I've never had it this good) so it's done it's job. Right now a lot of my money goes into going out with friends which is far, far more worth it to me.
