Just what is the ds capable of ......?

Open to guesswork, ideas, and just mad imaginings

What games do you see the ds as capable of running ?

    I.e. : n64 titles ? Saturn 3d titles ?

What would you like to see ?
For me sega rally, virtua tennis, and rogue sqadron/shadow of the empire

    Please discuss :

Well I dont want many ports but I'd settle for:

      Rareware N64 ports, Zelda OOT/MM remakes/ports, Sonic Jam/Mega collection DS, spyro 1 - 3 ports/

Havin seen Mario Kart DS in action, I'd have to say the DS is prolly more than capable of producing any 32/64bit title at 60fps so power-wise it would appear to be at least 2x as powerful as the N64, maybe more so as we've only really seen 1st gen games for it so far. But as ppl have said, my main interest is seeing new DS games rather than rehashes of old games. But basically I think it's capable of doing anything required from it and don't think it's the technical slouch alot of people made it out to be.

All good points you hit the nail on the head there I was just thinking about what the future holds for the ds, and how the power may be used

I doubt it'd even come close to looking like the PSP version, the resolution and general graphical fidelity isn't a fraction of what the PSP can do.

I think of the DS as being a more refined version of the n64, as it doesn't suffer from the same graphical traits as the N64

I'd like it clarified, new games or new game ideas. If its the latter it would apply to all consoles/portables

He meant new game ideas. More stuff like Ouenden and Trauma Centre. Its ironic that these games do not use any sort of decent graphics (in tech terms) but are some of the best titles out.

Rarely does a gem come along that perfectly balances gamepley/innovation with graphics.

I would say the DS is roughly the same as the N64. Maybe a little less power, maybe a little more. There really isn't much in it.

I like DS games to look clean. When designers try and make things look too realistic or detailed, it just looks messy ( which was also the case with the N64 )

With good art-direction and some imagination, you can get some really charming and effective visuals from the machine!

The DS is probably a little more effective than the N64, if not necessarily as powerful.

Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, is, bar the ****ty title, a beautiful, beautiful game, with a wonderful visual style. That "look" helps keep the framerate up, but really, it's a gorgeous, gorgeous game - far in advance of any PS1 or N64 title. Go and find videos if you haven't seen it, it's really, really gorgeous. And it also translates well to the tiny screen because of the "look" it has.

Innovation: no, but gameplay: yes, in spades. It's THPS5, not THUG3, and it really shows - lots of classic motifs, lots of sending itself up, and 2-minute score attack is the real heart of the game. I still love it, even if it's only "another Hawk game". Plus: wifi-connection, internet play, downloadable replays, view stats online. It's up there with Mario Kart and MP:H as an example of how to do DS online, really.

                            So you like it then?

To answer the question though, I'd say the DS is pretty much capable of any game style you can throw at it. Maybe a flight sim would be pushing it but even then as long as you didn't get too ambitous the DS could pull off something very special.

Personally tho it seems a shame that so few UK dev cos take the machine seriously. If they did then I'm sure you'd see some quirky stuff being made. I'd love to do a DS title above all other consoles.

The DS has so much potential as a games machine, i wish peeps would beyond the graphical inferiorities when compared toi the psp. I have been playing so much innovative playing styles that it has really opened my eyes up to how much fun video games can be, when its all about playability. No other console out at the mo can replicate its games in terms of quirkyness when it comes to the touch screen. You only need to look at the sales in Japan to see how the japanese have lapped it up, because its so easy and accessable. No more pin point accuracy in games, as the touch screen becomes your palette.
