Call of Duty isn't one of the games that is affected by running in different resolutions though, as it entirely relies on the scaler

I'm using 1280x1024 and the option for normal or widescreen is available for me. Tried them both, also tried 1024x768 with both options just to be sure but it's all stretched .

The strange thing is, Top Spin 2 does give me proper wide aspect ratio with black borders, while Oblivion also stretches. Does this mean it's depending on the game? If so I find this a bit of a strange design decision by MS. Is this also a problem for other people, and what about 4:3 TV's?

Yeah, I think it`s just dependant on the game. PGR3 wouldn`t give me a bordered widescreen image on a 4:3 monitor when using 1280x1024 but Kameo would. I`m hoping most newer games will have the option.

I guess one option is to set it to a widescreen resolution then use your monitors adjustment options to squish in some black borders

Yeah, never thought of that. It would do the job eh.

I did think of that but unfortunatly my monitor doesn't have those options .

acquired a vga lead yesterday just to 'test' if it was better on the projector... to be honest i'm not noticing much difference (if any, though maybe my eyes are broken) aside from the fact games seem to tear and jerk more with the vga cable.

the picture quality could possibly be down to my vga-dvi adapter. the jerkiness though, whuthedealio?

I think it is down to peoples individual TVs/proejctors not liking VGA as a format for fast moving images.

They are all setup to accept the VGA image and display a desktop and maybe powerpoint, not Gears of War running at 60FPS.

Are you running it at 1280x720? Anything else will cause performance issues in games.

It really depends on the display whether it looks better or not. On flat-panels, it'll bypass any of the nasty processing and overscan, whereas projectors tend to have very little, if any, of either on their component inputs. (I know mine only has overscan and no nasty edge enhancement etc, unlike all the LCDs I've had)

On my projector, component actually looks better (more flexible settings with an adjustable gamma, whereas VGA looks a bit "flat") but on my LCD, VGA is significantly better looking.

I've not experienced any problems when using VGA at 1366*768 or at 1280*1024when I used it on my PC monitor, infact if I put my 360 to 1280*768 since the big dash update, it causes weird brown bands of colour and frequent crashing.

Depends on the games you play I guess - was very obvious with Oblivion and the Dead Rising demo. (1280x720 DR = smooth, anything else and it was tearing all over the place)

Tends to look worse too, as the 360's scaler is crap - it ooks significantly softer running in 1360x768 (or 848x480 on 480p native screens) rather than 1280x720 on all the screens I've used.

i think it was at 1366x768 'just to see', but put it back to 720 and was still having trouble... think i'll stick with component as it looks the same and i don't seem to get any issues with it. also makes hooking up my pc easier should i require it.

                          interesting though.

Again, I never experienced ANY slowdown or tearing on DR only played the demo mind.

Same for me, running in 1366x768 and all my games work fine including the DR demo.

I remember playing Psyvariar 2 on someones VGA projector once and the frame rate wasn't 60fps solid on that, even though the DC has no problems running in VGA whatsoever and it is definately 60fps on my monitors at home. Could well be the display device if it's a constant slowdown in comparison. Tomb Raider does have slowdown in bits even in SD though, it's noticible if you look over the waterfall at the start of the game, though I am pretty sensetive to frame drops.
