What's the best way to get into 2D fighters?

I've got a few 2D fighting games for my DC (Capcom vs SNK, JoJo's, SF Alpha 3) but I've never managed to master them. So are there any guides available that would teach me the best way to begin. I'd count myself as a newbie, but can handle basic moves and can string together a few combos. Nothing special, mind

Or can anyone give a few brief pointers which would be able to help (and would be more useful than a guide IMO)

    Thanks

Well, most people played a lot of Street Fighter 2 as kids so we just grew up on them and mastered the changes as they got more and more complicated.

I must admit I miss a lot of the "Pick up and play" factor of the earlier games and I think that's part of the reason 2D fighters are somewhat dying out now.

I got into 2D fighters as that was all there was in my day.... I'm beggining to sound like an old man! lol

Anyway, we all used to play Street Fighter 2 and Samurai Shodown. I suppose we got into it as it was the best out there at the time. I'm not sure if I'd be into 2D fighters, or 2D anything for that matter, if it wasn't due to the fact that I'd grown up with it.

Best way to get into it is have a few mates over, get some basic moves down for yor chosen characters and play it until you start to improve. Have regular times during the week to fight and you'll get into them in no time.

2D fighters are fun, and when you're all at the same level playing winner stays on, it get very competitive. What you don't realise is that you're all getting better and better with every hour played.

Two arcade sticks and a healthy rivalry between friends are the magic factors really.

Out of those games Street Fighter Alpha 3 is the best one to start on.

You could do with SF3 3rd Strike too! IMHO it's the best in the series. SFA3 is cool too though

Thanks for the suggestions. During the 16-bit era, I played SF 2 Turbo almost religiously. But once I got a PSX I didn't touch another 2D fighter (they just didn't appeal to me then). Anyway I missed out on the dreamcast era completely and only got one a few months ago (I know...I know )

So basically I've gone from SF2 to Street Fighter Alpha 3 which, in comparison, is so deep that it's overwhelmed me while I play it.

Anyway I normally play as Ryu and can do his basic specials, but can't even manage the complex moves that require such precise timing. I guess the best thing to do is practise in the training mode and download some videos for inspiration (any links to some, please?)

Thanks for the tips, keep them coming

I find SF Alpha series too mind bendingly fast. If you liked SF2 you may find Street Fighter III's considered pace more attractive. I certainly prefer it.
