A lot of people seem to have vast DVD collections. I have around 150 and that covers almost 4 billy shelves. A lot of storage space. And I just sold 50 or so. Why do we do this? It seems most people who are attracted to gaming forums do, but why? At the end of the day its just materialistic.

Try having nearly 500 DVDs and trying to sell them...very difficult. I have sold about 30 but still have a lot-a lot will go, just picking the ones to go is hard. And, they are worth f*** all nowadays...ft:
Sell the collection Super Fami...
A pal of mine justified his DVD collection by saying "Look how good they look on the shelf"
That made me sell a load of mine. Dead money sitting on a shelf losing value every day....not good.
People will shout at me for this but emulators are more than enough for me nowadays-quick blast on F-Zero? Why not...

I don't know whether it's just me getting old or if I'm just bored of them, but now I find myself only playing maybe a couple of PS2 and PC Engine games while the others just sit there looking pretty.
I've not even touched my Super Famicom stuff for months, which a few years back I'd never have thought would happed.
The thing I'm wondering is should I sell up? I've already offloaded most of my PS1 stuff and all of my Mega Drive & MVS gear and have put most of my PC Engine gear on ebay, so should I sell all my SFC stuff? I sold a few carts already last week and am seriously thinking of letting it all go.
Will I regret it? Anyone else feeling the same way absout games?

The reason I haven't sold any of my DVD's on, is that the loss is way, way too much.
You buy a new DVD for ?15 - after a couple of months, you'll sell it for.... ?4 maybe? That just seems insane to me. But then again, so is keeping them just for that reason. ?_?

Street Turk; you said you sell them at CEX. What kinda prices do they give?
Also, apart from invidually listing them on ebay (no thanks) how else could one go about selling a DVD collection?

Personally I'd say just thin it down, just dont sell the whole lot, cuz your enthusiasm for gaming will more than likely come back. I've owned loads of consoles and games since I was a teen, most of which instead of saving up i've sold to make way for the next big thing.
As I've gotten older and re-purchased a lot of the consoles I once owned, even though I only have a couple of consoles on the go at a time, I have no desire to sell them on. But I suppose thats down to me enjoying collecting, as much as I enjoy playing them.
I like to think that my son and daughter will get some enjoyment out of them as they get older, my daughter is 5 this May, and she absolutely loves Mario Kart and Mickeys Castle of Illusion, so we always have a play on saturday morning.. think about the kids!!
Sorry about babbling on, but I really think that we all share this passion for gaming and collecting and that if a fellow forumite sells up he/she will regret it.

SuperSmithy:
Cex Prices are average at best (Ninja terminator 20p). BUT-they buy anything. I got vouchers as I will get a DS Lite. Cash prices are silly...Oh, and you can check their website for trade in prices-save you lugging a bag down there only to find you will make ?4..
Another place you could look at is the DVD forums. The guys on there are clued up though, so don't expect to make a lot of money.
The worst has to be Crimeconverters...ALL DVDs are bought for ?1!!! Great for junkies, bad for me

I've only got a PSP which I use now. The Xbox is gathering criminal amounts of dust, and were it not for the lure of Psychonauts in some distant future, it'd be sold.
About a year ago we started selling loads of DVD's and games on Amazon, or the DVDforums because they never got used - I would look through them all and think "Meh", and never watch or play them. They sat on the shelf staring at me saying "look, what a waste of money".
Now we just have the stuff that we *enjoy* rewatching/playing- not necessarilly highly rated, but stuff that's fun, or classic to *us*.
Dump the stuff you never use - I felt better for it.

I'm with Superdan less is more - For that reason I will resist buying a PS3 for as long as possible - Having all 3 formats last generation was good and all but I tended to lose "focus" on some games as I always have to have things at launch. Same with DS/PSP - The PSP is about to go as it sees absolutely no playtime (the DS sees some but I'm keeping it mainly because my 4 year old can use it whereas most console pads are still too big for his hands at the moment)
If you're tired of gaming go do something else and it'll come back someday in the future - I've been gaming since 1981 and never got tired of it and I doubt I ever will.

Anyway, I'm pretty much getting bored with games as well. I guess I should start reading much more. Probably put them away etc. If you never DID play them and never will, then sell them, of course. But I totally understand what
But don't sell your games. Keep them because you'll be dissappointed. If you do sell them, wait 10-20 years or so before you do that.I should start investing in popular games that are coming out and never opening them. Then sell them in 50 years and make a nice profit
Does anybody know who does this?

I used to think I'd never find a use for a lot of my old games or dvds, but I find I keep going back to them every now and then.
Like a few others here have said, trim the collection a bit and keep the good stuff. I'll probably do the same at some stage as well, though I can't imagine getting rid of my dvds - at least not now, anyway.

Well if it's anything to go by, sealed big box C64 games go for about ?10 and probably cost the equivalent of about ?30 back in the day, so just buying popular games isn't going to get you very far.
Buying DVDs seems sensless to me when I can watch whatever I want just by adding it to a dvdrental queue. If I want to watch something again, I'll just add it again. Saves a lot of space too.

Gonna probably keep the modded SNES cos she loves Mario 3.
The main problem is that a lot of retro stuff has fallen in value lately, so prices are pretty poor

My gaming now focuses on emulators and the odd quality game on the PS2-nothing else.
Seriously, do you really NEED all those games?
I have over 400 DVDs and flogged about 30 to CEX-felt no emotion and actually felt good. I am currently sorting them out so that I can sell more.
It is not good to hoard and if all you is look at them.....
Flog the lot and use the cash wisely.
If you're collecting games for noterity or value then sell all of it.

The advice here all seems spot on. Sell the extraneous stuff, keep the best. It may go against the 'hardcore purity grain' but theres always emulation if you ever feel like quickly reminding yourself of a certain game, and if you find yourself really enjoying it emulated, you can always reget it.
