It appears the Opera Web Browser will be free for the first six months and then you will have to pay in Wii Points after that, but as of yet the pricing for surfing the Internet etc. has yet to be decided, this is Worldwide, not just for Europe as well.

Maybe I'm still living in the 90's, when you were cool if you had a ping less than 200, but I was thinking more about the effect trans-atlantic routing might have on latency. What with all the reports I heard about SFII on XBLA being almost unplayable (did they ever fix that?) due to lag, I'm just worried that if I want to play Smash Bros against my pal down the road, my connection isn't going to be bounced 3000 miles across the Earth and back.

A little bit of a shame, but to be fair, I'm sure most of us use our PC/Mac to surf the internet. I'll just be using the connection for game related content, so I'll happily let it expire.

        EDIT:

Just spotted this on the video for the weather channel:

STill no clue as to whether this 'registered area' is just for the weather channel, or for the console as a whole, or how it is ascertained...

I think it just means it will be a free download for people who buy a Wii in the first six months, and then Opera will be a charged download after that. I would assume that once you've got it it won't expire - surely we aren't going to be paying points per minute online?

I forgot how dependent on Rare the N64 really was.

Still all this talk about Wii not working properly online in different territorie's is worrying, I think I might have to just wait until after launch before I buy mine, when everything is cleared up and I know what I can and can't do with a US machine in the UK. Or if Nintendo, could give us answer's now... but that's unlikely isn't it.

Quick question, even with the 4 million Wii's being shipped, you think they'll likely sell out that fast. I don't want to be stuck waiting for ages when I finally do decide whether to import or not.

shorley they cant charge you a thing for surfing the web? You can surf the web with a DS or a PSP with no charges, dont see how they could get away with it.

You have to buy opera to surf the web on the DS.

And it's supposed to be rubbish, just as it will be on the Wii. I've always been totally anti-walled gardens but for such limited systems it does have it's advantages. Xbox Live Market Place works very well indeed, and is so much easier than it would have been if MS had just let users download their own games and videos then find most of them didn't work.

Is that possible if the Wii doesnt do HD at all?

480p is as high as it goes. It's just a Gamecube inside remember.

With more ram, slightly powerfuller gpu or whatever and wireless bluetooth technology.

Shame though if it restricted to 480P = would prefer similar method to XBOX 360.

Utter pish, the machine is more powerful than the Gamecube, it has more ram for a start and a more powerful processor which is also more efficient. The GPU is also more efficient as well.

Nintendo still haven't made the issue crystal clear, but all indications are that it is a Gamecube chipset with more RAM (almost twice as much), running about 1.5x as fast. I think that is consistent with the graphical quality seen in videos.

Although it's not totally fair to call the hardware "a Gamecube" - it's really not far from the mark.
