    Heavy Rain [PS3]

Quantic Dream, who made the flawed but brillant Farenheight, have released a tech demo of their forthcomming game.

Forget the stunning graphics and the slightly dodgey lip syncing and marvel at a astoundingly well writtern peice of Tech.

With this & MGS4 the PlayStation 3 seems to be attracting some mature videogames. Looks good!

Impressive in certain parts. Not so impressive in others.

As you say. lip-synching isn't going to be troubling Valve any time soon and the animation had that frequent problem which seems to happen to motion capturing hand and arm movement.

However, facial animation was admittedly superb and the quality of the character modelling was quite scary. The demo could have done without the soap opera music though - the piece was working more effectively without it until it cut in.

    Impressive overall.

I watched this a couple of days ago, and whilst the environment around her looked great, she looked very odd indeed. They really need to work on their digital actor software me thinks, but all-in-all looks promising.

Big teeth. But the tech is impressive, particularly the lighting.

It'll be on 360 and PC as well I believe. (according to IGN)

Saw this thread and instantly thought of the best film never made: Chubby Rain.

Watched without sound here, and I agree with the comments posted. In some places, it looks like a step back (her mouth in certain views looked odd), but in others, it looked like a leap forward. I was particularly impressed with the bit at the end when she's pointing the gun at your (it's blurred) and her face is angled down but she's keeping view of you. Eerily realistic.

With certain tweaking, it could be immensely impressive.

Soon, great games will not only require skilled programmers, but it will demand top artistic direction and *proper* voice acting etc. I know we have these things already, but it's still too easy to realise that you are playing a game and you forgive the bad voice acting and dodgy animation to some extent. Here, they will show themselves up horrendously!

yet again an example of no matter how realistic it seems to get, it just doesn't look right...

                  that was ****ing disturbing viewing.

The uncanny valley effect in action!

She looks very... French. Funny, that. The big teeth and wide open mouth reminded me of Quantic's first game, Nomad Soul on the DC. I thought their animation dept. would have improved since then, but hey-ho.

I can't really help but compare it to CGI in movies.....i won't bother saying anything more cos it's probably trolling already >_<

That is one crazy mouth she's got there.

Her lips look all over the shop and her teeth are insane - when she was supposed to be smiling she just looked demented.

That said, some expressions looked pretty good - the look at "maybe that wasn't the life you were dreaming of" is spot on and the bit where's she walks towards you pointing the gun is superb.

I loved Fahrenheit so look forward to this. It's a good vision for technology at the very least, and was a pretty powerful cutscene.

I enjoyed that - the comments all mentioned above are so true, but it holds a lot of potential.

Its a shame they modelled her mouth that way, but more damaging is the lip-sync which is way out towards the end. The general acting is very good for CGI though, and if they fix those two faults it'll be quite a step forward.

I really hope David Cane doesn't go on his usual weird trip for this one - his games work best when they remain in the real world rather than the psycho-babble he clearly loves. Fahrenheit was incredible for the first two hours, I hope they can repeat that tension but keep it going for an entire game.

She's supposed to look dorky, that's why she never gets any jobs.
