Shiny Entertainments development cost for ET Matrix =

Ive just read this and its completely dumbfounded me.

Apparently Enter The Matrix has now sold 2.5 million copies BUT thats not the staggering/surprising factor, For the developers to break even on their development/production costs they need it to sell 4 million copies.

For the 3 years that Shiny have been "working" (used loosely ) on this game it has amassed a development cost of $47 million dollars!!!!

A couple of million was probably paid out for the Matrix license, but when you see how genuinely rough and buggy this game is you cant help but wonder what the hell that money was used for, considering a game the scale of Shenmue was rumoured to have cost close to $20 million it really puts this game into a very strange perspective.

    Whats going on?

I read an article on this somewhere. I can't remember the exact figures but the game had to sell a colossal number of copies for Shiny to break even. It was all down to the cost of the licence and the terms of the royalty agreements.

Given the popularity of the movie(s) I guess the Wachowski brothers could pretty much dictate terms...

          Development cost breakdown:

          Matrix License = 2 million
          Motion Capture = 2 million
          Animation = 100,000
          Control Scheme = 50,000

          Dave Perry's Salary= 40 million

Not trying to correct anyone here, but Shenmue was in the Guiness book of word records as the most expensive videogame ever made and I think it was close to ?50 million or $50 million.

If it wasent the latter sum then SEGA were even more silly (In a finiancal way) than Infogrames or shiny. Even though Shenmue turned out the better game.

                  umm... FF8 had a budget of 70million and FF9 had a budget of 90million.

They need to sell another 1.5m just to break-even? There IS justice in the gaming world after all . Even though selling 2.5m is a disgrace for such a bad game, I'm almost happy that they aren't even close to making a profit on this game. Let's just hope they don't get any where near that figure and the next games get cancelled because of it ft:

Hang on, I'm sure I read from Shiny that it had 4m pre-orders and had broken the previous record? Ok, who has been bull****ting?

Perhaps Mr Perry should stick to inane things, like animated 7-up logos.

I read somewhere, GamesTM or IGN I think, that 2.5 million sales was for North America only.

Im having trouble finding any websites that stil have those figures on there, best i can do for now is a google groups link with people discussing final fantasy budgets. The figures seem accurate as i do remember FF7 did cost 45 million to make...

I feel so sick. How can Shiny end-up doing this. Making a crap game for so much bloody money.

I always thought the Matrix would turn-out ****e, most sensible gamers never expected much, so the game only sold on name alone, to mostly casual gamers.

I think the situation will always exist until VR turns-up sometime in the far future.
