I agree. Top-down racers are really fun when they're done well. Supercars2 was a firm favourite back in the early 90's.

You get a few home-brew titles which play homage to old style gaming, but they don't have the polished design or gameplay that a top quality commercial release would have.

I would love a well-crafted totally modern top-down racer. High resolutions would enable more detail and precision. All the things modern technology enables, could offer the creators the chance to make something really fresh and exciting, but most of all, even better than their forebears.

Someone may make an amateur PC type game, or one may appear on Live-Arcade etc... but I would much prefer a serious, really polished , and most of all commercial type of top-down racing game. ( Mashed is good... not my dream though! )

2D style of gaming offers a different experiece and feel. The style may have been relegated to a little dark room of it's own back in the late 90's, but we all know it's because of the impact true 3D had, and not in anyway reason to assume 2D had become a bygone style, and one that wasn't wanted anymore!

I personally prefer a lot of games in 2D. Mario games, and platformers in general, are much more gripping and flowing in 2D than 3D. Action games such as the Contra series and Castlevania, feel much focused and fun in 2D. Shooters work better in 2D, because 3D, despite looking more real, is too open, and gameplay is therefore less tight and focused.

The fact is.. I enjoy both the 3D and 2D world. Both styles have their good and bad titles. Sometimes playing a good 2D title can be a really refreshing experience after burning-out on 3D for too long.

Away from Live-Arcade, home-brew etc... I would love a system which plays host to new, really professional, passionate 2D titles.

You have people moaning that ' New Super Mario Bros ' is good, but not as ambitious or new as one would like. There seems to be lots of 2D styled games around which are fun and look quite nice, but ultimately aren't as ambitious or fresh as people really desire.

My dream system ( The Megaton ) .... would play host to a new breed of cutting-edge 2D games. It would attract and inspire new and old developers, who are hungry and eager to create exciting 2D experiences for an enthusiastic user-base.

Away from the many new games that could be dreampt-up, I would love sequels too. Axelay 2 with mind-blowing new visuals and effects, and just as good level design etc... A true follow-up to Castlevania 4. A sprite based hand drawn Contra, that looks to Contra 3 and Hardcorps for inspiration. Not forgetting Treasure, and all the potentially brilliant 2D games they could conjure-up!

There is only so much the Dreamcast can do. Live-Arcade has only so much ambition and potential, and the PC 2D scene, whilst large, isn't too great.

To really resurrect the true heart and soul which 2D once had, we need a machine with an ethos that matches the enthusiasm and quality which the glory years of 2D gaming are fondly remembered for.

We need to look back, but most of all, we need to look forward. It's time for the MEGATON!

well Micro Machines V4 looks like it might fill the gap at least for a while, tho it's no longer properly top down by default. Supersonic will hopefully rectify the flaws Mashed had for V4 though

Super Cars was just amazing, I loved it on the Spectrum and later on when I got a PC, DOS ^_^ but another game I'd love to see make a return is something like Formula 1, which was an F1 management sim, but it was very streamlined, and so far more accessible and a fantastic multiplayer title as everyone was involved in the same race and you watched the cars whizz past the start line on eventful laps (if there was no event it skipped a few to keep things more interesting) and then when your car went into the pits you had to control your pit crew to change all the tyres on the car.

Was great fun an if it still loaded on my spectrum I could see myself still playing it for hours. Might have to find a ROM of it to play it again.
