No, it's a piece of cake. You just hold one button down for autofire (circle is best), and use the R button for the special attack. There are no instances where you want to be not shooting, so it works great.

I wish there more TATE shooters like SS.

it jus feels a bit uncomfortable trying to press a button imo but maybe my thumb is a bit too small to pull it off properly or something I don't know, personally I found X the most comfortable button to use for shoot

I managed to buy SS yesterday (Sunday) looking forward to it, stupid not to ask about autofire! after all the cube version didn't have it! i bet this looks amazing on the psp screen (in tate).
