Naruto: Saikyo Ninja Daikesshu 4 - can anyone help me?

i need some help with the Naruto saikyo ninja daikesshu 4 ds game

i've recently bought it in the play asia sale and have very little idea whats going on

i can normally muddle through japanese games ok but i'm obviously missing something important with this one.

two main questions:

how do i get multiple characters to come to battle with me? played the first level and had some friends with me, no other level has them in. on some levels it lets me pick a character then it looks like i get to pick another one but i end up just shuffling some words around.

second - i played the first level and that put a tick on the level on the grid thing. i played the next level and completed it but no tick, what gives?

if anyone can lend me a hand i'd be most grateful

jesus, i didn't even think to check gamefaqs, normally my first port of call as well...
