As far as the kind of games we buy, yes. But it carried on doing very well for itself for quite a period after that. The PSOne version of the recent Dancing Stage game outsold the PS2 version of it, IIRC.

Fifa 2005 was the last football game on the system too wasn't it? or 2004. Either way, the PS1 defiantely got alot of releases post 2000.

It might have. But none that was remotely going to change the tide of moving on to other technology or have a serious impact on people moving onward in the major territories, both in development and in the consumer market.

Didn't Sony take out a corporate loan for the first time in years recently, to beef up its war chest for the PS3? And didn't they need to borrow quite a few more beer (PS3) vouchers than they anticipated?

Interesting to note that the blue diode yield for blu-ray is really suffering right now, and the lasers that were due in many third-party players are being re-directed to the PS3. Put it like this... it'll be interesting to see how many returns the PS3 gets in it's first few months in comparison to the 360. I have a feeling this generation is going to see far more early adopter units going belly up quicker than those before across both consoles.

Oddly enough Eurogamer have a little write up today with Kazza (as he lets me call him) which explains the 10 year thing

SCEA president Kaz Hirai has predicted that the PlayStation 3's life cycle will last for 10 years, hinting that the con…

He's his usual vague self, but it's pretty much as Soi put it - they expected that the PS3 will still be going in 10 years time, even though we might see the PS4 before that.

The irony there is by the time they have streamlined and reduced costs on the console its so late in the life that most people would have already had one

When you think about it though in a consoles life a group of programmers could probably get 3 or 4 games released (depending on the company) some may only manage a couple

By the time there on the last game they probably already have programming kits for the next gen systems i just wonder if a systems capabilites are ever really pushed to the limits

But go back to one of the first posts which sums things up. Sony has absolutely massive brand loyalty with the PS brand, and if what some of my friends have been saying about waiting for a PS3, then even I have underestimated just how loyal these people are.

Paraphrased from that Eurogamer article about the 10 year thing:

                    Q: "Will we see a PS4 before 10 years?"
A: "Once you buy a PS product, you become a family member"

Brilliant. He should be a politician. Kudos.

brand loyalty is one thing but if a company does many stupid things then they can lose it quite quickly

I thought almost all hardware sold at a loss and software was where it was at ? Sony's internal teams haven't done that many big sellers (sure ICO etc are great but they hardly set the charts alight).

Given they must be taking a big hit on PS3 despite the high price this surely isn't a sustainable financial model ?
