    True cost of PS3...

An interesting article concerning the PS3 price drop and I guess what the true cost of owning a PS3 may be!

As an exmple of current costs I've taken Dead Rising as an example from Amazon JP, US and UK and est. the top end of PS3 according to the IGN link.

    Dead Rising JP ¥6703 (?30.28 ) US $56.99 (?29.46) UK ?39.99 8)

    Est. Cost (top end) PS3 JP ¥9800 (?45) US $84 (?45) UK ?55.99

So if you add in the fact that we'll get shafted again in the UK........

I really think that Sony need to start talking costs and setting things down in stone, because all these rumors have put me off buying one at any time in the future.

So if they release the PS3 for £6, you won't buy it due to the rumours?

Its also dependent on exchange rates, 2 years ago my US games cost me about ?8 on average more than today , that could change in the future

And US prices above have no sales tax on them...?

(add another 7% or so there for people in the US who'd buy them from shops)

yeah but I think it's purely for online, as otherwise Xbox 360 would be ?49.99 rather than ?39.99 over here

Its bad enough paying ?40/50 for today's games without them going up in price by a tenner. I mean gamers are getting ripped off as it is without them going up in price. The minute next gen games i.e. PS3 titles hit ?60 then i can see the industry disappearing up its own arse.

I like many people here used to pay ?60+ for imported games in the 16-Bit days, but not anymore...**** that! No game is worth that price now, no matter how good it is.

Anyway, i think games these days are getting worse and not better or am i losing interest altogether?!

Regardless of the cost of the PS3, if the games are pushing ?60 then I'll never buy one. What a rip!

I dunno I think it's just the ratio of crap games to good games has risen from somewhere around 10:1 to 200:1 or something.
There's so much worthless crap out there now, and countless sequels that make the previous game even more worthless.

To be fair even the so-called halcyon days had a lot of utter ****e coming out. I actually find that there's a higher percentage of games that I like enough to play for any length of time today than there were back in the day because now there are very few out-and-out horrible games like there used to be. A lot of average stuff to be sure, but not many heinously bad ones. Remember what your average movie adaptations used to be like?

The games industry is kidding itself if it thinks ?60 games could be sustainable. For most people it's entertainment, but that price suggests that it's almost a lifestyle. The kind of audience who comes to a site like this struggles to justify that price for even the best of the best so how can Average Joe be expected to buy any games at that price?

'They won't' is the answer. They'll stick with their PS2 where they can get new games for ?25-30 and a large back catalogue of used games for less than a tenner. Bye bye, industry.
