    Are IGN notoriously smug?

OK, so this might turn into what's presumably another IGN bashing thread, if that's a problem then mods, close it.

But I had to get this off my chest, I was reading craig-IGN's "blog" and read this regarding Wii preorders:

Launches have evolved out of the long lines on launch day to long lines in order to receive a slip of paper. Enjoy playing with your 50 dollar piece of paper, guys. I'll wait like a good little IGN editor. As much as I like being the "good uncle," I'm not going to sit in line just to have the EB guy shutter the gates in my face and say "preorders are cut-off. See you at launch."

Yep, I run the risk of not getting additional systems after the launch. I'll live.
Did I totally misread it or is the guy gloating that Nintendo will send him a system free because he's a journalist?

If so, what is the need for this "Ooooh, look at me, I get free things" stuff?

I'm pretty sure Craig isn't going to receive a free Wii, just because he's a journalist. Matt, who runs the wii channel at the site has to buy one as well, so why would Craig get one free?

I think what he meant was he's not going to put down $50 for a preorder that might not materialize on launch day, effectively ending up with a piece of paper as he put it. Instead, he'll wait it out till the console launches and then he'll pick one up, hence there being the risk of not receiving one if everything sells out. He's insulting the system (one I'm sure not many of us favour to begin with), not bragging about his status as a journalist.

That's probably it then, yeah. Must have got the wrong idea from that one!

I think he was just saying that he wasn't going to bother trying to preorder one, but instead wait until they are just on the shelves.

Well that's how I interpretted it

To me it sounds more "be jealous of my job" than "I'll get a free Wii." That's the only reason I can think of for him referring to himself as an IGN editor rather than 'boy' as the phrase should go. Still a bit smug.

I'd assume that IGN will get at least one free debug unit for reviewing and previewing games, but generally they don't give away the hardware just because. The most I've heard of is something like a limited edition DS and even that requires numerous sexual favours. Allegedly...

Does sound a bit like 'i left it too late to pre-order'. Maybe he didn't think the pre-orders would sell out
