to start the ball rolling a bit of info about the AI mode (taken from gamers.com)
Irem today published a full explanation of the AI Versus mode in its upcoming shooter R-Type Final, discussing how this unusual extra feature will work. Players will be able to define the behavior of an AI-controlled R-9 fighter, and pit two of them against each other in a race to destroy enemy craft, collect items, and avoid getting killed in the process.
The stages in the AI mode appear to be a bit different than those in the final game, because they're built around a different purpose -- one-on-one competition between fighters, rather than the more traditional one-against-many style. However, the parameters for the AI configuration are designed to suit the structure of those levels. Players can determine their fighter's aggressiveness, defensive posture, weapon preference, Bit use, item acquisition priorities, and other variables that determine how well it will survive in competition. Then, after turning them loose to fight on their own, further adjustments can be made according to its performance.
After tuning up an AI fighter against the computer, it's possible to save it to a memory card and pit it against another human player's creation, just like in Virtua Fighter 4. The potential of the AI mode also grows with progress in the rest of the game. Unlocking new ships in the main single-player mode frees them up for use in the AI mode, and different ships must of course be set up in different ways for the best AI performance.
As the final encouragement for players to try out the AI mode, Irem is holding a nationwide competition between AI creations in Japan. After perfectly training an AI fighter, the game will define its characteristics with a password, which players can send in for testing. The best fighters will apparently win fabulous prizes, although Irem has yet to reveal full details of the contest.
