Minority? Technically right, but that is in the ball park of saying remainer voters are a minority. Looking at that first link anything outside the annual franchisees with big online components (fifa FUT, GTA online, COD) the UK physical and digital sales are equal and contain PC players who can only buy digital.

IGN article solely about UK from Jan2023 about 2022 linking to BBC article which includes mobile game apps (30% of all sales, seems to me they are counting any digital sale within a mobile game like candycrush, warzone or fortnite) when we had just come out covid. The rest of articles content another IGN link about capcom sales were 80% digital in 2020 digital (wonder why) and then same for cyberpunk 2077 again released in late 2020.

Could Sony ever take the chance to kill someones PS4,5 and 6 collection when the PS7 comes out... it would be a really hard sell, and i'm 100% confident Nintendo won't in my lifetime.

It wouldn't be killing anyone's collection, the existance of a PS7 doesn't stop anyone playing previous games on the consoles those games were made for and by the time PS7 comes, the influx of people with the dispoable income to spend are the people who've grown up with digital - if you want to cling on to Hope Iceberg that's your perogative, but it's travelling towards the equator.

In all honesty, I don’t know how much that argument even matters. It’s still a premium product with missing features unless bought separately.

          But will it blend?

And it wouldn't be £699 if it was built in, so it would be more premium for something not everyone needs - if you want the drive, you can buy the drive - Sony isn't holding a gun to anyone's head here or disabling your PS5 standard from working or stopping future games from working on it - if people don't think it's worth the cost, they won't buy it.

I personally don't have an issue with buying the drive that Sony delivered yesterday and given they've sold out all over the place, nor do others.

You can only buy the slim with the add-on drive from Sony's store now - it's £90 more than the digital version. This means the Pro gets the 2-gen leap GPU (RDNA2 -> RDNA4) and an additional 1TB storage for a £310 premium - that doesn't come across as bad value to me compared to the cost of similar parts.

Ah, we’ve hit the “gun to the head” stage. You’re right, Marty. They are not doing that. You are very much correct about that.

We have gotten to that stage when we've started crying about "Jack Ryan" ruining Sony, yes. It's £310 more than a PS5 digital stuffed with a load more brand new tech from AMD - it's not ripping anyone off.

Some of the online discourse on this has been utterly ridiculous and screams of entitlement.

Jack certainly would have have done better than Jim . He changed the companies focus, we've lost years with the western leadership attempts to chase the live service money and even with the sole success sony managed, they dropped the ball hard with Helldivers2. Just what could we have had with those 100s of millions lost, instead spent funding small and medium sized games that come out at regular intervals (games like Wipeout and Ape Escape, keeping Team Ico doors open) how many Astrobot level pitches or unique multiplayer games have been crushed Bungie/Sony Heads combo.

The problem i have is always the same.....if something comes along and sets a precedence, the amount of times things have happened and then before you know it things are much worse, So with the PS5pro if sony see people are willing to spend lots of money for less than it could alter plans for the next consoles and before you know it in a few years we are seeing 700 for a PS6 base console.

I'm told that no one is going to buy it at £699 though, so that's not going to be a problem, surely?

If you want to build a PC with a similar level of performance, you're going to be spending a similar amount of money - it really isn't bad value, it's just expensive because it's higher-end technology. I can't image Sony pricing a console they want to sell to a mass market at a premium price, this is not a mass market product - it's the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

We shall see as its the silent majority that will dictate it, I was pricing up building a pc and for £738 could get a Ryzen 5700, Motherboard 32gb ram, case power supply and a 7600 AMD card and a 1tb SSD drive and while still need to get keyboard/mouse/ OS when up an running would still run many games very very well indeed and of course could always chop and change parts

That is a slightly lower spec GPU than the one that will be in the Pro and like the 7700XT in my linked build, RDNA3 rather than RDNA4 with the dedicated RT cores but a later generation Ryzen and half the storage - that as you've seen trying to build an equivalent being very much in the ball park of the price of a Pro - and yes, that would be a reasonable 1080P PC.

Jim Ryan did an astounding job running PlayStation EU then PlayStation world wide, in fact I’d say he’s a case study in how to run a business correctly, bringing Sony into their most profitable period under him, which is quite the achievement given how successful the company was before he took overall leadership.

There’s also the dedicated PSSR hardware in the pro as well which hasn’t got an AMD equivalent to buy off the shelf, by all accounts it’s all based off Insomniacs work on their tempest software, so is proprietary to Sony.

Maybe if disc drives don’t come as standard in future they can support 3rd party drives to drive the price down. 😏
