    Premature question..any opinions?

The Wii is doing something different, i don't need to explain as everyone here knows that!

This is premature but what happens if the Wii is a sucess, how would nintendo build on this, i mean after the consoles start a new span e.t.c (sorry, it is very premature)

On the other side of the coin, if nintendo fail (i really don't think this will fail, far from it) but say they do, what happens then, would they try pick up with the sony/microsoft route?

Lets say in 4-5 years the wii was a success what do nintendo do, go wii2? sound familiar! would that happen? Anyone with good knowledge or opinion wanna say stuff! Please do.

I would reckon if it goes really well the next console from ninty would be similar to the wii in terms of innovation but with real ps3/360 power behind it

Good question, the scary thing is, they'll have a team of people probably starting to brainstorm now (or at least in the new year).

In those interviews by Iwata on the official Wii site, they said work began on the Wii as soon as the GameCube was released

I suppose it will depend on how things pan out over the next four or five years but it's pretty much a given that advances in chip technology will make it possible for the next machine to have better graphics capability without necessarily being more expensive.

I'm not sure they'd try beating Sony and Microsoft at the console 'arms race' though, since their new 'disruptive strategy' is tantamount to admitting that they can't compete on this aspect. Sony have decades of engineering experience and a world-wide electronics concern to support their R&D, whilst Microsoft can bring software experience almost for free and has the industry clout to bring in partners like ATI and Nvidia to help it design it's technology. I think Nintendo would be foolhardy at best if it tried to outcompete them.

If the Wii fails I can see Nintendo continuing to concentrate on games that are innovative, fun and accessible but also cheap to produce, possibly by getting out of the home console business and concentrating on handhelds and niche products, and maybe software like Sega do now.

Good write up. It's your last paragraph that scares me and has for sometime. Sega fans are already living the death of sega. I don't think i would cope too well if nintendo didn't make home consoles.

If it happens i will certainly trash some consoles (showing intellect now) but i feel (showing non-intellect) that nintendo will fair exceedinlgly well this gen.

I hope so. I also hope for more promising things from sony, i think that xbox360 is a proper console, and has followed on from xbox which is more than decent.

If you go by their history they usually go 2 consoles before making a big change. The NES started with the joypal while the SNES refined that pad and added extra power, the N64 brought us 3D and the analog stick then the GC refined that pad and added extra power. The same could be said of the GB>GBA too. So if history repeats itself expect to see in a few years a DS with PSP-like power inside of it and a Wii with enough power to make the PS3 cry.

I'd rather hope it would have the power of PS4/720 rather than always being one step behind in terms of power.

Well if the WII becomes a really big success i can imagine sony and microsoft releasing similar controllers and games

i really hope nintendo has got the third party support for the WII though

Thats a tough one about 3rd party software, sure it's great to have loads of games but people usually buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo software.

I'm hoping with the Wii people will want to try out CoD3 with the remote rather than the bogstandard pad. The potential for 3rd party software is massive if the general public are up for playing their much loved games (ie Fifa 200x) with a new control method.

If it's successful Nintendo will try and incorporate a more immersive experience I imagine. If it's a flop? I don't really know but i'm hoping the Wii will emulate the DS and although it starts off slow people will play and buy.

So far? So good. People seem to enjoy it but the test of time is against the new control method and hopefully it won't become stale at all.

Well hopefully nintendo can release more quality games quicker

for the gamecube when the great games were released they were really great

but i must say between the gaps of the big releases there would be far more good games released for the ps2

Indeed, people waited for the new big Nintendo game and they see the new GTA on the shelf and got that instead. I'm hoping the rumour of new IPs from Nintendo is true, sure that Disaster day game and H.A.M.M.E.R are welcome additions but I want something with a bit more charm from the looks.

Pikmin was such a good introduction to how good new nintendo IPs can be. Let's hope they keep it going

Hmm, if the Wii is a success then could we perhaps see an extension to the life span of the machine. I mean if it sells well despite its limited graphical power then is there any need for them to be working on a more powereful Wii?

Could the Wii have a comercial life of 10, 15, more years? If graphics are no longer important (for Wii's target demographic) then what is the need to upgrade?

It'd come to a point where the differences between say the Wii and the PS4 would be too much. Graphics are not the most important thing in the world but having a more technical machine could provide a more immersive and enjoyable experience for the player.

crap example : 32 player Mario Kart race instead of 8

Well actually for the WII i was kindoff hoping that because of the difference in power and controls we would see a lot less of those games that get converted to every format

Meaning that nintendo would need more system exclusive games
