I am usually up on leads and signals but I don't know what "composite sync" means in that sentence. I assumed I'd know if I had a plasma or projector.

You just reminded me to something... Samsung's "Slim Fit" line of CRT HDTVs. They're indeed not easy to come by it seems, but you might be able to find them online.

Being CRT such a display should still display SD signals nicely while also display HDTV signals using HDMI and the models I've seen mentioned online also do component! The only downside seems to be no PC ports (no VGA/DVI). But if that's what you want, you could get a videocard with HDMI out I suppose.

Anyway... this would be a pretty ideal TV for me (component for a US Wii yet still display all SD signals properly and ready for HD devices like a Xbox360 or PS3). The only problem for me would be getting it to my apartment: I live on the third floor, with no elevators, and CRTs weigh a ton

Edit: model number is WS-32Z4xx (where xx is either 08, 09 or 19 afaik).

They don't count as with all the geometry problems they have, they're practically an advert for panel displays.

I've got one of those kiddies and the Wii looks nice through it even on composite 50hz. 60hz looks a bit garish though! Still waiting for those elusive component cables.

Yeah, there were pictures posted all over the AV Forums at one point - apparently it was just impossible to get anything approaching straight-ish lines and distortion-free sides of the screen thanks to packing a CRT into such a small space.

Hang on, so you can't use RGB on a U.S. Wii?

                  Is VGA still a possibility?

RGB and VGA should both be technically possible but it won't be as simple as we (I?) originally thought and will probably require console modification.

Ah, feck. I'm not really inclined to go for any console modification so soon.

                      DAMN IT NINTENDO!

Just had a thought... if I play a PAL GC game on a U.S. Wii (via freeloader) on a T.V. that displays American games in black and white (through composite... with RGB its full color), then what am I bound to get? I'd be using composite, since it doesn't have S-video. The PAL game runs in 50Hz, not 60Hz. Will it come out black and white, or color?

If you didn't want to mod the console you could buy a Component to RGB transcoder but these aren't cheap. You'd probably be better off compromising and using S-Video.

^ There's one for 89 pounds - just not worth it surely.

If the game is PAL 50hz only, and the GameCube was anything to go by, you'll get a stable 50hz picture with completely scrambled (but mostly black and white) colours. Using a Component video cable will get you a colour 50hz 576i picture.

You can get that for a little less.

Cpc version of the same thing

The JS Technology one is 150 pounds, but it also has a VGA socket on it for 480p output to VGA monitors. So it doubles up as a VD-Z3.

I've just got one of these, they've been reduced to 90 quid (to sell to the Apple TV crowd) and I luckily picked one up off ebay for 35 quid + p&p.

I set it up yesterday to convert my Wii (US prog scan) to my 26-inch Widescreen LCD. It performs magnificently. Image quality really amazing. I'll hook it up to my 33-inch 4:3 CRT in the next few days to check out the RGB conversion.
