Having played quake on my DC i got used to aiming with my left thumb, and now find it much easier

The other day i was having a Halo multiplayer with some mates, when i tried to use the default set-up i could hardly control the thing, had to switch the sticks

    (I'm right-handed btw)

but that's the good thing about Halo, it has several different setting meaning anyone can play no matter which stick you prefer to use... certain games just think "no matey, you won't be playing this easily" and have no option at all, like Splinter Cell, which means i either get rid of it (likely) or i sit down for hours and unlearn the way i play (highly unlikely) and all because of lazy games developers.

I've tried doing the movement/aiming with opposite thumbs to normal, and I just can't do it. I find it impossible. It's too ingrained now

In cricket, I bowl under and overarm using my left side, but I bat right handed.

And yes Staplehead I'm a freak heh, your reasoning for the "around the loop" is what I've always suspected. Guess I decided to go the "opposite" way and just copy the way they were holding the pen instead of the angle

It seems like most Leftys (myself included) become semi-ambidextrous.
I write with my left hand, but I can look/aim using either control setup, and I've never had any problems with a standard control pad or arcade stick.

Oh yea, and I use scissors with my right hand, use cutlery right-handedly and hold a PC mouse in my right hand.
But I hold a (light)gun in my left hand.

Similarly, I got used to aiming with the left thumb in Goldeneye and DC FPSs, so when I tried Halo, I instinctively used this option. But it soon became apparant that you can't keep pushing towards someone with the right thumb and then bash them over the skull with the gun also with the right thumb, because you have to move the thumb away from the stick to get to the bash button, by which time they have retreated a couple of steps. I tried swapping thumbs over and the first half an hour was hell. I thought I would never get it. But after an hour my brain had switched and it's just as good. All it needs is time.

see i just 'cheat' there and move my fingers from around the pad to whack the melee button

As a lefty I can't say I've ever felt the desire to change the default 'right handed' controls in games. I think having movement attached to my left side is a good way to go.

Like the others I write upside down, bowl left handed, bat right handed and taught myself to use a mouse with the right, which has now caused my left hand to really struggle with a mouse!

Fully configurable controls should be more widely adopted by the industry, control is the most imporatnat aspect of a game and they should allow users to adapt them to suit themselves.

I have a nephew who due to an attack of kawasakis disease at the age of 3 months lost 3 fingers form his right hand. He is now 7 and loves his videogaming and is better than his brothers at some games however with certain games and controllers he has problems which could easily be rectified if the games allowed him to configure the control setup. Its yet another example of the amateurish nature of the games industry when it doesnt bother trying to cater for disabled gamers.

If some developers can make fully changeable control schemes, then surely all can do it (technically). We need to make these options available as an industry standard, to help all those with handling difficulties, regardless of the reason why. If we desire to see games made for all as a respected general entertainment medium then issues like this need to be sorted as a base rule for all game developers.
