I've set mty wii to run at 60Hz instead od 50Hz. is that better? I have a startard but modern widescreen CRT tv which i know have both 50Hz and 60Hzs

your need progresive leads if you use a hi def tv to get a good picture 60 hz will be crap with the ccrap leads you get with the wii.
compontent or vga is the way to go then you can use 420p wich give twice as meany line in the picture.
there is a big change in zelda with the compont leads its so much sharper.
