    IGN's Top 25 Videogame Franchises

Fairly new, but I decided it should be posted here as it may turn into a debate/how **** ign is fest and its not really headline news. Anyway, heres the link.

Ign Editors were asked to consider the overall importance, strength of the titles and the future potential. Impact of the games (which may some consider importance) and sales were not considered (although some franchises in this list may lead you to think overwise).

Anyway, Overall I'd say most of the titles included was around about right, although the listing was in the wrong order. Heres some of my gripes:
    • Why is Half Life so low?
    • Sonic should be lower.
    • Madden?
    • Sims?
    • Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon all classed as "Tom Clancy". So is Splinter cell a Mini-Franchise then?
    • No Halo?
    • WarCraft and Metriod too high up (although I'm sure some will disagree with what I say about Metriod).
    • And much more.

Clearly this kind of thing will create lots of debate based on personal tastes, and in line with my opinions i question alot of their choices.

MGS should never be that high, they are the most irritating up there own arse games ive ever played.

On the other hand its good to see Castlevania up there as i cant think of a CV game i havent really enjoyed, even the 3D ones on the PS2.

Star Wars? I think not. You're lucky if 10% of those games are actually any good.

Zelda should probably be #1. Mario has been diluted with loads of average spinoffs.

Donkey Kong is an IP not a franchise.

And that's it - by #23 the whole thing has fallen on its arse.

Oh man I just checked the rest - What a load of pish. I'd agree with 1 & 2 (although Mario has become an IP to an extent with all the pimping) but GTA is top 5 without a shadow of a doubt.

Halo franchise is the best of this decade, it's criminal to think it was excluded.

Its even worse when they include the Trigger games.

"While many out there may not quite consider this an actual franchise per se, the Chrono games made our list based purely on the indisputable quality of the original SNES game. Considered by many to be the pinnacle of 2D RPG gaming"
Hmmmm surely on those grounds Halo should be there as the pinnacle of FPS on the Consoles and as one of the biggest selling franchises around.

Blasphemy I say! Fair enough, some people might not like it, but the majority do like it hence it being voted that highly!

It's debateable whether it's the best but it's certainly one of the strongest franchises, it got the Xbox off the ground and then Halo 2 sold a whole lot more consoles and increased Live's popularity signifcantly.

Its probably too soon to add halo to the list. It would have been the newest franchise on there, the only one to have been born this century. Maybe might explain why half-life is so low on the list, having been released in 1998. Never really got on with that franchise, so not that I care really.

Nice to see Castlevania so high on the list, but disagree on a few other candidates. And wheres Mortal Kombat???

Pokemon really should be top 5 and Half Life should be higher than it is. D&D should also be much higher, top 5 really.

And as much as I love Castlevania, is it really that big? Number 4 seems strangely high.

In fact, looking over the list again, they don't seem to have got anything right, they seem to have just shoved Mario and Zelda at the top and then randomly allocated the rest. Its a complete mess.

Pokemon? Please tell me how Pokemon has been a bigger influence in videogaming history then Sonic and some other games that are down the list. Star Wars games have always been ****e, only Super Star Wars was okay but come on people...

Although there are a lot of poor uses of the Star Wars license there are many good ones, more than any other film license I'd say - their space sims were outstanding, especially TIE Fighter which had a great storyline and gameplay. It's a tragedy no games of this type have been remade in modern times as there's been little to rival them and all they need is a graphics overhaul, I'd love to do some co-op X-wing vs TIE Figther: Balance of Power again, fighting it out with advanced TIE Fighters with ISDs as the backdrop the the SSD Vengeance entering into the middle of it was jaw dropping.

More recent games such as Lego Star Wars and KOTOR have seemingly done well, while the Lego versions may not be serious or in depth I've definitely had a good laugh with them.

Surprised none of the ID shooters have made it there, while Doom3 and Quake4 weren't really up to their predecessors both were extremely strong series for the PC.
