I'd certainly recommend Silent Hill but with a few disclaimers. The animation is poor, the models very old and blocky, textures very low-res, all very muddy and you can only see a few feet in front of you. If the older end of old 32-bit graphics offends you, this may be hard to get into and may lose you right at the start.
That said, the muddy look and visuals that are sometimes hard to make out actually really enhance the atmosphere. But that hurdle is still there to get over first.
The other thing is whether you're intending to play it on the PS3 or PSP. Many sections of the game are close to pitch black. It may not be great on the PSP unless you intend to just play it at home where you can darken the light around you.
Last disclaimer is that the controls are, to fall back on the overused term yet completely appropriate here, clunky.
If those things aren't an issue, go for it. It's very creepy, the sound is amazing. Story is mental. Voice acting piss poor but characters actually come together really well somehow. And an overall fantastic and creepy journey.
