There's a new Sega Genesis section on the way to the PSN, they've only announced the US details so far.
Today, SCEA and Sega have revealed that PlayStation PLUS subscribers are going to have access to the SEGA Genesis Collection for the PlayStation 3... entirely for free.

The 6 games in the collection will cost non subscribers $4.99 a piece and won't be available until a bit later. While many of these were included in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, this is the first time that all of the games will be released a la carte and include their own trophies. As a big Genesis fan, this is most definitely awesome news.

Check out the release schedule below.

    PlayStation Plus Releases (free)
    • Sonic the Hedgehog - Available March 1 - April 5
    • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Available April 5 - May 3
    • Streets of Rage 2 - Available May 3 - May 31
    • Golden Axe 2 - Available May 31 - July 5
    • Comix Zone - Available July 5 - August 2
    • Altered Beast - Available August 2 - August 30

Regular PlayStation Store Release ($4.99 each)
    • Sonic the Hedgehog - March 29
    • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - April 19
    • Streets of Rage 2 - May 17
    • Golden Axe 2 - June 14
    • Comix Zone - July 19
    • Altered Beast - August 16
Hopefully SCEE we won't be to far behind or with a bit of luck it'll be added the same day as it was with the Neo-Geo Station section.

It'd be even better if PLUS subscribers get them for free over here.

    EDIT:
Confirmed as coming to us starting in March and all games will be free to PLUS subscribers.

In the next few months, Plus members will be able to get their hands on these classics: Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe Digital, Comix Zone and Altered Beast.

Sonic is coming to you guys a month before everyone else on PSN and all the other titles will be available two weeks before general release. And with all the titles having added Trophy support, you will have a good head-start.

They’re all available at no extra charge to Plus members and two weeks early, I’m happy to confirm.

This has to be, single-handedly, the stupidest thing Sega has ever done, in the history of Sega. And that’s saying something.

On eBay right now you can buy the Mega Drive collection, with over 40 games on it, including all the above, for less than $10.

Why in the hell would anyone wait several months, and then pay more than they would for a disc copy of the game, to have a digital copy of the game, that costs more, that they have to wait to be released, when they could buy the entire collection for less on a single Blu-Ray right now.

Any human being who pays money for those games when they are released is, quite demonstrably, an idiot in need of being committed. Just buy the Blu-Ray collection for god’s sake!

It being free to PSN+ people is fine, since it's just a nice little bonus, but charging so much is ****ing ridiculous!

I have to wonder if the whole point of this exercise is not to sell the games, but to make it seem like Plus is such a great deal. Deliberately overprice non-Plus versions so that people think, wow look how much I could SAVE! Because you're right - to buy any of them at that price would be lunacy. They may have put some deal with Sega in place to make it worth their while - probably a cut from Plus sales, I guess.

Nice for Plus subscribers but there's a bit of a stench about it.

Hmm, a good point. I was so flabbergasted by the announcement that my paranoia meter didn't even have time to react. And it's not even that I'm annoyed by the high prices - like everyone else I could probably get the Collection for a fiver if I looked.

A conspiracy to make PSN+ look like a bargain seems logical. Same reason they made games like Stacking free. I know of at least one person who subscribed to PSN+ so he could get the game free along with the other so called "perks".

Thing is, once the sub runs out you lose everything.

God I hate PSN+. Sony have taken something which was really awesome, PSN, and made it awful through such trickery. I also don't like having to wait for demos of things like Yakuza 4.

With online stores such as PSN many sales come from instant purchases rather than people price hunting different outlets and finding the cheapest price.

There seems to have been decent response to the announcement but that of course doesn't mean they're going. If people are happy to pay that much for them then there's no reason for Sega not to sell them for that much.

The option to buy them or not for the advertised price is always down to the consumer and if Sega think they're selling enough at that price then if they have any sense, they'll keep selling them at that price.

Maybe once you've paid for them you'll be able to find a way to pirate them and continue to play them like you did with those PS1 games that people questioned you about in this thread?

Mind blown. Just as well someone was here to explain basic economics.

Over time I've come to feel like the UK PSN+ isn't really worth the money but the US one isn't too bad. I can see why on paper having stuff expire with the sub is a pain but for me I know I won't be playing Stacking when the sub expires... I think the only games that really are at issue are the ones available in the last month of the sub if you're not renewing. Even without PSN+ they're open to being removed if Sony choose.

What is your problem? Sanctimonious bull**** like that is a far more harmful thing than my playing pirated PS1 games. Do you work for the industry? Because if so fair enough, I know to give you a wide berth, but if you're not than you're behaving like an idiot.

I bought the games second hand, so no money went to the publishers anyway. There is no option to buy most of those games new, unless they end up on PSN. And when they did (such as with Suikoden, Einhander, and about a dozen others), I went and rebought them, despite already having the ISOs on my Xbox. I pirated Parasite Eve (US) the other day because months after the Japanese release they still refuse to put it on the US PSN. They can either allow me to buy the games or shut up about it.

What you are failing to realise, with your narrow minded adherence to a series of perverse laws, is that without piracy a lot of these are lost forever and can never be re-released due to licensing problems. In lucky circumstances some are still cheap to buy second hand, but what about those that aren't? I don't want to hold on to some rare ?100 game, better to sell it and then help spread the ISOs through uploading and DVD archive sharing (and god bless the communities that do this).

Until all old games can be re-released and bought at a reasonable price, or until someone fixes copyright laws so that older works can be more easily distributed, I am going to say that RETRO PIRACY is a damn good thing, because otherwise games would be damned to obscurity. Better to pirate than deny the world something worthwhile.

Yes I play PS1 ISOs, so what? Get off your damned high horse you insufferable, pious, self-righteous, smug cretin.

Sorry, I presume that's a mistake? There are people in that thread who have questioned those actions but I certainly haven't.

Sanctimonious as a description seems a little out of place in reply such as the one above to be honest.

You appeared to be having a go at me - if you weren't then you didn't deserve my ire. Perhaps even an apology is in order if you genuinely weren't trying to antagonise me.

Regardless, you are correct in that the people in that thread deserved it first and more strongly than yourself - I was going to reply to them, but apathy at the time stopped me. On reflection I most definitely should have, since in their blinkered opposition to the "universal evil" that is piracy, they're not making a distinction between the age/availability of titles.

There's a whole debate regarding this (piracy of older games, DRM, PSN+ and its rental nature etc), but I don't want to derail this thread further, so I'll leave it there.

A week after I use up all of my US PSN cash they release Xenogears

Kind of regretting buying Alundra now.
