Good timing on resurrecting this thread, my Megadrive and Sonic the Hedgehog turned up today, (fresh from ebay). I played in two dimensions in my lunch hour and didn't miss the third one at all.

3D is good though, without it Friday the 13th part 3 wouldn't be half as funny as it is now. Oh no... not the harpoon!!!

Scrolling beetemups seem to be making a comeback, with (the utterly dreadful) Spikeout, and the upcoming Urban Rein, Beatdown and the new Final Fight. And I kinda thought that scrolling beetemups had just evolved into hackandslash games like Dark Alliance or Dynasty Warriors.
Not quite the same thing, but still an evolution of the core gameplay mechanics.

2D platformers do seem to have been getting rarer - at least on home consoles. Even 2.5D platformers arnt exactly commonplace. Still, I guess nothing on earth is going to stop Capcom from churning out another MegaMan game, and on the GBA the 2D platformer is alive and well.

I guess there has never really been a Dizzy/Seymour type game since the days of the Speccy and Amiga, unless..... well I suppose they kinda got replaced by the survival-horror genre (thats a bit of a stretch I know). Cant say I miss them much - spending 2 hours doing fetch-and-carry puzzles, only to be killed because you jumped and tumbled into a flame.... and theres no savegame function, christ how did I ever put up with that?

Surely the DS would be ideal for this genre!

For me I would like to see scrolling beat em ups again. There has been a few since SOR et al, but not many, and apart from Guardian Heroes they have all been poor.

            Any more?
Surely Dynasty Warriors is the best scrolling beat em up ever?

I'd like to see the return of decent space war/trading games. Not seen since the 32k days!
