    NTSC-U Mario Kart 64 issues

Have any hardcore fans of this classic noticed any audio-errors in the emulation? Here is what I've noticed so far:

    - The voice samples have some horrible hi-pitch filter on them (as do some of the SFX

    - The music sometimes jumps, especially noticable in the awards ceremony, but it seems to happen randomly in other parts of the game too.

Folk on the rllmuk forum are saying that they can't notice anything, but that might mean they don't know the game as well as I do, and/or, they might be playing the PAL version, which might not suffer from these bugs.

The US version plays fine for me. Just as I remember it!

How familiar are you with the N64 original?

In fact, anyone else who says they can't hear any audio problems - would you be prepared to record a complete play-through and MP3 it? There might be something wrong with my Wii, but I haven't had any problems with any other games. If I can listen to a few other peoples audio, I can determine if it's my Wii or not.

I have the US Wii download version and the music skips on mine, I notice this in races and time trials.

Not on this game yet (only played 2 tracks) but ive found emulation dying a bit on Sonic, had parts of the music drop out and the graphics break up.

Oh my god I thought I might be the only one!!! I have this too, it's especially noticeable in the menus, the selection noises sound really odd, like they're being sampled at the wrong rate! In a race it sounds OK though.

I own the N64 original aswell so I know what they're meant to sound like.

I have noticed no music problems though.

I am playing the PAL version.

Nintendo 64 emulation will never be perfect guy's, I am sure some games willl suffer from similar issue's.An upgrade through a firmware update will more than likely solve all the issue's.I highly doubt it is the rom, I would say the emulator is still not complete, as like the ps3/ps2 emulator, there will be update's to them as issue's arise.

Yeah, there are a couple of issues of this nature but they're extremely minor concerns I feel. The sound drop-out glitch is the same one as was documented on the Cube version of Majora's Mask - but less prevalent (I'm fairly certain that the emulation code is a very close relation of what was used on the Cube for the aforementioned and Ocarina/Ocarina MQ).

I've noticed the overtly sharp/crisp sound issue in the menus (I have the PAL version btw) but nowhere else.

Even taking these niggles into account, the RGB picture, smaller borders and higher resolution make this better overall than the original PAL cart anyway.

Does anyone remember the crash bug from the original though? It was usually found in 4 player mode on Donkey Kong's track. I think it may have been eradicated from later presses of the cart, but it was there in mine. You would hope that it doesn't feature in the VC version. I'm all for authenticity but crash bugs we could do without...

here is more problems with the game in the USA. It seems like the emulator is having timing issue's which would explain both this glitch and the sound glitch.

I'm sure Nintendo are aware of the issue's now and are working on a fix, it was bound to happen with some N64 title's as the machine is very complex to emulate.

The emu scene has had the N64 audio emulated perfeclty for over 3 years now:

                      There is no excuse Nintendo.

Anyway, glad to hear it's not just me who has noticed the faults, it means that it's not a fault with my Wii.

Yeah I noticed the sound was off too, the high resolution, better mapped controls and RGB make it a faaar better product imo though, and for a mere £7 it's a bargain really, as it fetches £10+ cart only on ebay. Amazing what difference the higher resolution makes for the N64, also really highlights what an almighty cock up no RGB was on Nintendo's part for the N64.

I've played N64 games on emulators on PC before, but actually playing it in high res on a CRT in RGB just makes it look like a completely different game.

Well, we're talking (Wintel) PC emulators here. I've got a PowerPC-based Mac and I've never seen an N64 emulator for it that is anywhere near fully functional. Maybe the PowerPC type processor in the Wii is an issue for emulation?

The Moo Moo Farm 3-player turbo-charge happens on the PAL VC version too, to a lesser extent!

It must be a frame-skip messing up due to the power of the Wii.

Doesn't really excuse it though does it? As they're dripfeeding us these games, it's not as if they have to have a 100% perfect emulator on their hands - just optimised well enough for the games they release.
