Im not sure what you could have as GOTG. Its too sweeping an award. There are so many diferent Types of games on 3 diferent consoles that to pick one out of all of them is too hard.
Driving game, RPGs, 2d fighters, 3d fighters etc...there are too many. I guess what the award is really for is "What game has made a real contribution in the gaming world in the past generation?" How many of you would answer RE4 to that question?

It'd be GTA. I mean... I think we all know GTA's significance to the last generation.

But is the most iconic game of a generation necessarily its best? That's hard to say, because I personally prefer San Andreas over GTAIII as a better game, even though in terms of impact it was III which had more weight.

Personally speaking ICO is by far and away my favourite game of all time, because it fundamentally changed the way I see videogaming, but I can understand how plenty of other people would disagee.

I do relate to the points you're making though... there are plenty of questions to pose when you're looking back on a previous generation's best games and what they mean.

Did everybody who isn't happy with the results vote in the first place?
If so fair enough. If not, you can't really complain at the result.

            Eh, no it isn't.
I just think if people aren't happy with the results and didn't vote, then it's a bit silly to complain.
            To reiterate.

            Eh, no it isn't.

And yet, I found it to be one of the most boring games I've ever played. Running around really slowly. Empty environments that were far too huge. Only played it for 30 mins though and didn't get grabbed enough to continue, so my opinion's worthless.
Why isn't Shenmue a better candidate than GTA? Just because not many people played it?

Totally agree with GTA (the series) being the GOTG.

It really was a step forward moment in gaming. The big world/small sandbox combination was spot on. The vision created was delivered, it was incredible when it first came out.

The anti-chav factor (why it's labelled chav is beyond me, not all great games are 'cult' games) has an influence here where people don't vote for it as they feel they shouldn't.

Although I place Shenmue far above any GTA, it's unquestable that GTA can be played in short bursts with it's relative freedom or can be induldged in for hours.

In other words it can suite any playing style and I believe it's part of the appeal. Most games are very linear and although it's true that GTA's main story is stop-start in mechanic, the story can be sidetracked at any time for a spot of adventuring.

I think GTA really kick all that free-roaming gaming into the next stage.

Absolutely. There was nothing like GTA3 when it came out. And there have been very few titles since that have been able to deliver that same amount of freedom and yet still have a structured game that held together. SA is almost overwhelming in its potential (though, I would argue that the amount of land is a negative).

As for why Shenmue isn't a better candidate, well, I would say it's because Shenmue gives an initial appearance of a fully working world and then doesn't deliver on it. It's window dressing. It's a fantastic game, no doubt. But how beautifully realised the world is actually draws attention to just how limited the game itself really is.

Your absolutely right about shenmue. Even tho i did say shenmue2 should be a candidate for GOTG.

Okami came 4th. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head but it wasn't that far behind Oblivion.

Gears of War and Resi4 won their awards by miles though. Also less people voted for Generation.
