Just another piece that online isn't working yet

Was speaking to a good mate of mine at Climax over the weekend who heads up a number of things. Got talking about Moto GP2, he comes here and reads the reviews, and was very pleased with the 8/10 score we gave it. What he isn't pleased with is just how little the title has sold so far: 20k units. Yes, you read it right, 20k copies have been sold. Total. And yet, their Italian Job license is estimated to shift almost 10x that amount. It is also likely to be their last Cube title as they have a couple of finished-but-cancelled games in their roster and might well just pull out of the format. Bad times indeed...

So with Xbox Live in place, great reviews all round for the game, why isn't it selling? Apparently the US is the worst (if you can call it that) selling region so far, don't Americans go for fast bikes, or is it just fast cars and monster trucks? Frankly I'm stumped and so is he to an extent...

Tell him its because of the stupid off road penalty.

    Im going back too GP1.

I think as a sequel too many bits where actually worse than the first game. infact i have seen alot for sale on here and ebay (2nd hand) I would say that Edge overrated it, the only improvement is the going round backwards during online play. For me a oppurtunity missed

(i love the 1st game btw, and got the 2nd the day it was out - it just has been spoilt)

I would guess one problem is the length of time between the original and the sequel. Most people will still be getting the most out of the first game, and don't feel the need for a follow-up. Their intentions were admirable, but Climax should have waited another 6-8 months, at least, before the sequel hit the shelves.

Aye tell him next time if you want to release a sequel release one that doesn't feel like it could of been released for MGP1 as an update.

Also tell him watch a MGP race they don't powerslide all the way round the corners only when there showboating like Rossi yesterday. MGP2 is ruined by the fact you have to powerslide if you want to keep up with the fastest about.

There was bigger gap than most sequels. Are you confusing Moto GP with the Xbox Live "Demo"? I bought Moto GP near enough the day it was out, loved it to bits, fortunately I couldn't afford the sequel when it was released, and from hearing Roost and other peoples comments on it, I'm glad I didn't get it day of release. Long live teh original! I cudn't bear another Midtown MAdness 3 (identikit to rest of series)

Was the bit about the Cube an aside or was it meant to say Xbox? It doesn't seem to fit in the flow of the paragraph.

Climax are converting (or releasing depending on how you see it) Italian Job (the new one based on the film remake) on all formats. But it will probably be their last Cube game according to my mate. He mentioned that the Cube conversion of one of their other games, Quad Power Racing, had been completed but is just sitting there and will probably never get published. Not his decision, even though he's right at the top of things. Looks like they will be focusing on Xbox mainly, with PS2 as an obvious cash cow port format.

He is actually pissed off with the online content too to be honest. He only wants where it is appropriate and is being forced quite often to including something despite that fact that we agreed only a tiny % of people will actually get to use it. And PS2 online is an absolute barst to code for so he says, much prefers Xbox Live even though that has its own technical issues...

Apparently not. I've got quite a few bike riding American friends and they all go for the slower more comfortable bikes. I've met friends of these friends while out there and they all have the slower bikes too. In fact I've not met an American with a 'fast' bike.... Some have Harley's. Some have Triumphs. And some have BMWs. None are sports bikes....

I bought MotoGP2 on the XBox and only played it offline (can't be arsed with Live).

                        But ...........

I also bought it for my PC (it was only ?17.99 from mx2.org) and have organised with a few mates to take that online soon. I much prefer to play online via my PC.

I agree. I didn't bother upgrading either. Perhaps if they hadn't released the online disk for the first Moto GP and this was the first online one it would've performed better.

And weren't Climax working on an exclusive first person shooter for GameCube?

Personally, I didn't see the need to "upgrade". Climax did such a damn fine job on the first game, that I couldn't see how the sequel could improve in that many areas to warrant my thirty odd quid.

Although some people buy the same football game year after year to get the updated teams, I don't think that many people actually care whether their playing with the correct 2003 colours for Moto GP racing .

I upgraded and was sorely disappointed.

By all intents and purposes it's an amazing game and is better than the prequel. The problem is that it wasn't THAT much different than the prequel which you can get online for either free or for just ?20 if you want to unlock all the stuff.

I think releasing the original on budget a couple of weeks before 2 came out was suicidal. Few people gives a ****e about the latest riders, because few people give a ****e about the sport itself and wouldn't know Valentino Rossi if he was stood next to them.

So with that being the case it's unsurprising that ?20 won out over ?40.
