    PS3-PSP Remote Play (wireless)

I got bored so I thought I'd give this a go. It's late at night so prepare to be confused...

It's pretty cool! You can browse the PS3's dashboard on you PSP screen! Let's say you have a movie trailer (even a high def one) from the PS3 store saved on your PS3 hard drive, you can watch it on your PSP screen. The same goes with music and photos on your PS3's hard drive, if the music is on your PS3, you can listen to it on your PSP.

Another cool thing is while I had the remote play active I put an audio CD in my PS3 and I could also listen to that on my PSP. It was kind of strange putting a CD in my PS3 at one side of the room, then walking to my PSP, selecting a track and playing it. This method doesn't work with DVD or BR movies. I can't see why not though, I guess Sony want you to buy the movies again on UMD so they disabled this option. Another down side is the picture quality, when browsing the PS3 dashboard on the PSP, it looks low res compared to the standard PSP dashboard.

SCE could do some really cool things with this if the get their heads together.

If anyone else wants to try it then I'll write a step by step guide on how to set it up when I get the chance.

Most certainly it's something I'M interested in. I can't do it with my current firmware (v1.50) but i'll prob be going up to one of those natty custom ones soon. What are you on?

It's a standard feature in the regular firmware from 3.0 upwards. I tried it once, but didn't think it was of much use at the time. However, apparently in the 1.6 PS3 firmware update, it will allow for remote viewing/listening, which could be more interesting...

Can you stream music from your PC to your PS3 a la Xbox 360? Then stream that from PS3 to PSP. If so that would be genius and very useful!

Yeah I probably won't use it much yet until Sony add more features to make it worth while. I just thought if we've got the stuff, why not set it up? Should be interesting to see what Nintendo is gonna do with the Wii and DS.

No, not yet anyway. I can't see it happening though.

Probably the limits of the PSP's wireless capabilities. The PSP is only 802.11b which has a theoretical maximum (meaning you'll never get that high in practical use) data rate of 11Mbps. The maximum bitrate of a DVD is 10Mbps and BD goes up to 40Mbps, so even streaming a DVD is pushing it.

That and the obvious copyright issues, since DVD and BD are encrypted which would make streaming them illegal in many countries, including the US.

That's what I thought at first, but it lets you stream a 720p Blu Ray trailer from the PS Store.

Edit: You?re defiantly correct to a certain extent, if not totally, because when I stream a 720p trailer, the quality wasn?t as good as watching a UMD movie.

Video downloads are probably going to be relatively low bitrate, and I doubt even 720p trailers in MPEG-4 are much higher than DVD bitrate. I'm sure the PS3 is up to doing a quick and dirty downsampling job on those.

Yeah, I've just watched Casino Royale on BR and the video quality was a lot better than the trailer I downloaded from the PS Store.

Do you need internet access to do this or is it done between the two units directly over wi-fi?
                      Kept you waiting, huh?

No you don't need internet. It's done between the 2 units wirelessly.

what can't you do - stream media from a PC to the PS3? If that's true then it's a bit of a blow to the whole 'media hub' side of things... roobarb -------
