Discovering MAME was a biggie for me. When I drifted back to being hardcore into games about three years ago, I actually didn't know that emulation existed. When I found out that there were thousands of games accessible at the click of a button, I was astounded. I don't use MAME much now really, only for one of two titles, as I have enough bloody console stuff to be worrying about. But it feels great knowing that if I want to, I can fire up my Xbrick and play some obscure arcade games, albeit those that I own the original board for, of course.

I must admit as well that Gears of War really blew me away. I had owned my 360 for about a week, played only Pro Evo 6 and Dead Rising. Both were OK, but it was only when it all clicked into place for me on Gears that I realised - jesus christ - this is amazing, this is what everyone means by "next gen", why so many people are into the 360. I thank Jebus from off here for making me take the plunge. I was texting away to him one night after a few beers, and his enthusiasm for GOW, coupled with a loose comparison to Resi 4 and my paypal balance meant that I went ahead. I am glad I did, and today I picked up Crackdown.

Most of all though I reckon the defining thing I did was sign up for these forums, because it gives me a secret world of nerdo internet mates who made me fall in love with gaming again!

Watching the trailers for Silent Hill 2.

In my opinion they got everything right in those trailers, and the music was perfect. the theme tune was awesome - something I don't think Capcom have acheived in the series since.

Although FMV, the visuals were excellent and the characters really hooked me in, and the game itself delivered above and beyond my expectations. One of the few games I have actually put the time in to finish. 3 & 4 just didn't have the atmosphere and felt just like 'games'

That, and when the bad guys started actually beating the doors down and coming through the windows in Resi 4 - it was such a welcome shock, only to be amplified when The chainsaw guy cut my head off - I was like 'can you actually be allowed to DO that in a video game???'

Whilst I'm at it, Almost completing Cybercon 3 on the Amiga, I remeber trying to explain how it worked to my Dad, who could understand my gushing over a bunch of polygons. Another game that had atmosphere in spades.

Relams of the Haunting - lordy that scared the life out of me, and again, I finished that one. I loved Anthony Crowthers games, and still play Captive to this day.

Seeing the loading screen for Atic Atac and thinking 'can graphics get any better than this?' was a defining moment too, as was striding around the playground at school with a new big box copy of Sabre Wulf for the Spectrum - I'd bunked off the morning and saved up the £10 to buy it. Got it home, played 5 mins and thougt it was a bit poo..

Aww man, that was a fantastic game, I used to play it with my brother and sister and we were all completely fixated by it. I wish I still owned a copy purely for nostalgia's sake.

It had an excellent story and even though they were probably quite hammy, I really enjoyed the FMV scenes. I remember the actress was a hottie as well

I **** my pants playing that game.

I guess the defining experience for me was Elite on the BBC. I played it for days, weeks, months. Sunk so many hours into it over the years its ridiculous.

When I first played it I guess I must have been about 8 and had still that amazing ability of a child to put believe in there imagination. Looking back on the game its full of blank spaces but to me as a child it was a rich full world that I created my own stories in.

Anyway. Thats the game that got me hooked on gaming. And as such I think is probably my most "defining experience".

Got to agree with this. Even though I'm pretty much a lurker this board has had a large influence on my gaming.
