    Videogames Live

I didn't see a thread for this in search and the recent features on 1up and Gametrailers piked my curiousity.

Type in VGL in Youtube and all sorts of videogame orchestra snippets come up. Not entirely related to VGL, I came across this from eminenceonline (a video linked to from their homepage) of an orchestric version of The Opened Way from Shadow of the Colossus. I'd kill for a proper, live rendition of Those Who Remain.

Anyone on the forums been to orchestral game concerts when they've been touring? If so, what did you think?

Unfortunately not, but sinse getting my iPod at Christmas I've become extremely attached to Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy Piano Collections and Orchestral renditions of Final Fantasy VII,VIII,IX and X's music.

There's some fantastic videos on YouTube from one chap, link below:

Even if you're not into Final Fantasy I reccomend a listen, absolute perfection!

I went to the VGL concert at the Hammersmith Apollo back in Novemeber, first one I'd been to and it was a bit of a mixed bag really - the size of the orchestra was a bit tiny and the choir was so-so. One thing I noticed however was how closely the music actually matched that of the various music CD soundtracks (The Zelda rendition was almost note for note identical to that orchestral piece on the Ocharina of time CD).

What I think happened was the CD itself was played through a speaker system with live instruments played over the top.

I have heard of a full sized orchestra Video games concert, although there are no London tour dates sadly.

Shame. I'd love to see a full Orchestra play music from the likes of Shenmue, Shadow of the Colossus and Tomb Raider etc.

Which Tomb Raider theme would you want to hear?

I'd love to see this show. I love orchestral soundtracks and rearrangements (Gyakuten Meets Orchestra, the Phoenix Wright album, is amazing) and seeing them performed live would be awesome. The properly orchestral soundtracks would be just as brilliant because there's very little better than Harry Gregson-Williams' MGS2 theme.

I can't find a link now but IGN Insider has been posting tracks by Eminence Orchestra for download. They've got a great version of Radical Dreamers from Chrono Cross.

Beautiful and Mysterious. A track which really brings that mid-90s summer air explorative vibe the first Tomb Raider exuded. It's beautiful.

I'd also love to see an expanded rendition of Magnificent Ruins.

Many of the Tomb Raider pieces are short, but they're very memorable.

Yeah, I linked to a SotC piece above from them - great stuff (though I wish the percussion for that particular track had been heavier. In the game the beat literally rumbles into the ears). Who wouldn't want to go this event considering the concert line-up and who's attending?

i went to the recent concert at GDC in san francisco

i can highly recommend it, the orchestra is really good and i almost died when they played the metal gear stuff

the highlight of the evening was when koji kondo (composer of mario and zelda) came out. the crowd literally exploded and there were many standing ovations.

the only downer was the host. he's some ex game composer that started the thing up and is a bit of a cock. he worked on advent rising so we were all treated to his music from it which didn't sit right when you have the ball breaking epicness of MGS, zelda and final fantasy on the same play list.

they have also taken to dragging round vertex guy (chris kline) who performs game soundtracks by being a guitar playing bad ass and the asian guy that became mega by posting a video of himself playing mario and zelda on the piano blindfolded. he is a ninja

if you go and see it, when the host comes out and finishes off the halo section, tell him to turn his guitar up. and that you don't care about his ****ty game and just because he has the stage it doesn't mean he needs to bang on about it. i bet he doesn't give a **** about the ****ty games i've made...

I remember hearing Aerith's Theme from FFVII on some FFVII remix cd and falling in love all over again...I'd love to hear that live!

Tommy Tallarico is far from being an 'ex' game composer.

He worked on Metroid Prime, for a start.

I went to the South Bank show last year. It was rather good but had something of an American slant to the whole evening, probably due to Tommy Tallarico. Frogger isn't the first thing that springs to mind when somebody asks if we want to see an arcade classic.
