I love it when a new console comes out...

...because I usually get into the old one just as everyone is singing the praises of the new one.

Case in point, the new PS3, on the surface, it looks like an excellent machine packing some awesome new technology and whilst some may say that the launch titles lack that certain something, there is no denying that, despite the huge price tag, this is gonna be a monster machine BUT I am not rushing out to buy one, simply because I can't afford it but rather than being sad about my lack of funds I am, instead, flexing my fingers over the prospect of buying my very first PS2 EVER!

Of course I have played them before, round my mates on occassion but I have never actually owned one, until now. With games like Okami, God of War 2 and Final Fantasy 12 only just being relased or soon to be in GoW2's case, surely the dying swansong of games for the aging PS2 is just too good not to induldge in and at Tesco's prices, ?20 for Final Fantasy 12! now is the best time of all to get involved.

Same thing happened with my Gamecube, bought it just as Resident Evil 4 came out as part of a special edition set and I have not looked back, games like that and the likes of the Resi remake, Tales of Symphonia, Metroid Prime 1 & 2, RE: Code Veronica X, Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and loads and loads I simply cannot think of all for virtually pennies second hand at your local Gamestation.

Do you think I should get a PAL or a US PS2, are there more games available for the US version and is the slim PS2 worth getting simply for the bonus of not having to use a bulky stepdown converter?

    Thanks

Even though it's more expensive, I'd recommend a chipped PS2.

Get a US one. Unless you chip it a PAL one is worthless and plagued by 50hz issues.

A fat US one, stick a network adapter on the back and whack in a mega HDD for 'quick loading' and other goodies available via torrents.....

You can't buy a non-slim one anymore. The PS2 itself is cheap, so just get a slim one.

Im in exactly the same position, so many great games to be had.

          Although i dislike:
          Wired controllers
          unofficial controllers.
          Sonys controller in general.

but theres alot of fun to be had out of it and its getting cheaper by the day so i shall join the ps2 bandwagon soon.

If you get a slimline us ps2 you dont need a stepdown if you can get hold of uk ps2 psu (not hard) id also recommend a modded machine for the best of everything.

Get a Logitech wireless controller, i hate 3rd party accessories but took the plunge on this - after using the 360 wireless and Wavebird for so long, it was tough to go back to the Dual Shock pad.

Enjoy the PS2. It's a fantastic console with a diverse software line-up that's really only rivaled by the PSone and SNES. There are at least 20 first-rate titles to be had.

Plus, the Slimline model is so dinky it's adorable. I barely even notice it's there most of the time. Mine will probably live underneath my TV for years to come.

until it breaks and you replace it with a ps3?

Examples of the most underrated and overrated games ever. The ZOE games are fantastic fun and stunning graphics wise. MGS2 and 3 are so over rated its truly mind boggling IMO.

well i'd kinda agree about MGS2 but 3 is a masterpeice combining films and gaming - plus the new additions to the gameplay are excellent not just tacked on.
