I don't think I made myself very clear in my response, apologies for that.
With games, if you're outputting a HD resolution/refresh rate it will do as HD resolutions don't rely on the PAL/NTSC standards but it won't work in SD.
There's also a similar issue with some blu-rays.
Many of the BBC's natural history blu-rays are correctly mastered in 1080/50i due to the BBC finding that a 1080p compatible refresh rate just looks unnatural when using the longer lenses which are required for this type of work. I personally don't notice it as much with games as I do with DVDs though.
Even though the BBC blu-rays not region locked they just bring up a black screen on a US PS3 due to the lack of 50Hz output even though this is a HD format which is a little annoying as we have a US and UK PS3 in different rooms.
So with 50Hz games in HD the PS3 will covert them to NTSC friendly refresh rate but you do get the usual side effects of doing that and it won't output them in 50Hz. Trying to output in SD/60Hz just won't work for a 50Hz game without the conversion as only PAL PS3s support 50z output.
With 50Hz blu-rays, they won't work at all.
