Blind game purchases recieved as gifts

You ever had a relative or a friend buy you a game who had no idea what the game was actually like, but they thought it looked good by the cover?

I wanna hear the bad ones and the jammy nanny good ones

I haven't had a game blindly bought for me since I was kid, but two I will always remember are...

Pippo and It's a Knockout!, both for the ZX Spectrum 48K.

Both were bought for me by my auntie. Pippo wasn't that bad to be honest.

I was bought an Xbox as a surprise, I'd been nagging my mum for ages and one day when I came back from school it was there in my room! I excitedly took everything out of the bag, expecting Halo but instead was greeted with......Gun Metal! The unappreciative lil twerp I was back then I burst out "Where is Halooooooo?!". The story did have a happy ending though, I ran to the shop and exchanged Gun Metal with Halo....ahh happy days.

I got Sonic Rivals for the PSP for xmas from my girlf. I've played it twice and it's horrible. I felt so guilty, I had to tell her how bad it was. Of course I'd feel even worse selling it, and the icing on the cake is it was obviously bought at high street prices

Anyone who would be buying me games will ask me first so I'm alright there.

Normally I've been asked what games I'm interested in for Xmas/Birthdays, but a few years back I was surprised with... the Bruce Lee game for Xbox!

Needless to say, that was the last time anyone has bought me a game without asking.

Oh, and when I was much younger, my dad surprised me with Donkey Kong '94 for the original Gameboy, which was fantastic, as it was great fun and lasted aaaaaaages. Possibly my favourite Gameboy game.

I think he also got me Heart of Darkness for the PC as well, which was good fun at the time. (not sure how it holds up now though)

Seeing that Pippo cover really takes me back, i had that on my Spectrum too. Generally no one buys me games as they know i'm really fussy and buy 'strange' imports. That said my girlfriend did totally surprise me last christmas with Viva Pinata which i hadn't really mentioned wanting, i think she just saw it and bought it. I like it though so it was all good.

                      Quoted for truth

One xmas i got Street Fighter Championship Edition from my mum and dad, a total blind purchase as they just asked the guy in the shop what sold well. That pretty much set me up for a life of 2d fighters, pressing 'Start' to change between punches and kicks or not

Got bought a Donkey Kong game and watch a few years ago too, which was an unexpected surprise

when I was a kid, in a complete one-off, my dad bought me wonder boy in monster world for the megadrive. I looked at the box and though "for god's sake. what the hell is this gay piece of ****?". I saw the price tage of ?6 and though "ha! there's your answer!"

Later on, I begrudgingly put it into my megadrive and gave it a quick bash and became utterly addicted. What a game.

When I was really young I had an old Master System and got addicted to some Alex the Kidd game built into it, I think I had a Sonic cartridge too, anyway... at just about the time the Saturn launched my dad thinking me a Sega fan bought a Saturn bundle from Comet. 2 Pads, a steering wheel, Sega Rally, Manx TT, and... I forget what else but great gift. Sadly I didn't appreciate it so he sold it a few months later

The next year I got a PlayStation and was quite content playing demo discs the 2 weeks up to Christmas when I knew I'd get games... what did I end up with 'Blam! Machinehead' which I never even tried to play and "Street Racer" a crap cart racing game. Needless to say both were traded as soon as the shops opened.

                            :O

                            Don't diss street racer!!!

Can't really think of any, I've ever just been given, usually I've been rather vocal about what games I want, and now I just buy all my own stuff.

I've had a fair few unexpected suprises that turned out to be bloody good...

                              - Mega Drive + Sonic 1 & Streets of Rage back in '91.
                              - Game Boy with Mario & Tetris
                              - Donkey Kong for my Game Boy off an auntie when I was a nipper.
                              - I got a PlayStation with Rage Racer as a suprise game, fantastic. I even was given an N64 with Mario 64 that same Christmas too! Although the N64 was sold off to fund PS games, as I simply couldn't afford N64 games at those prices..
                              - Soul Calibur as a suprise game when I got a DC for Christmas.
