    Spiderman 360- 3

Thats low. Too low. 5-6, sounds picky but that nearly double the score.

it deserves a 3 just for the hideously freaky character models and god awful normal maps

On gamerankings there's one review that got a lower score than Edge's 6/10 for RC2: "Hilarious" Rallisport Challenge 2 review 4/10 - opens the gameplay section with "driving games are either arcade or sim - this one is definitely an arcade game". He then goes on to rip it apart because it doesn't handle or control like a sim. Might as well rip it apart because it's not an F1 game....

mate, if you really came to think that the visuals are what makes them outstanding, then you probably missed some of the great gaming moments i had with both games.

I'm keeping out of this one - But it's a miles better issue than we've had in a good while.

There was a massive error in there which I can't remember off me head - I'll post it later.

And in the GTAIV preview they mention that the 360 is getting "substantial DLC" but that nothing has been confirmed for PS3 - that isn't what has been posted here.

It's stating the obvious that the Halo games have always been showcases for Microsoft hardware. They have to be - they are system selling titles.

Now it seems Bungie for whatever reason haven't been able to rise to the challenge of current gen, but MS will get away with it this time due to the lack of competition from Sony. In 2008 they'll have Gears 2, which will surely look amazing.

I'd argue it looks poor in comparison to other games because they've changed focus and have made the multiplayer the priority over the single player game. So they have to cut down the effects and polycounts simply because they never know how much stuff can be thrown onscreen at once without hitting the frame-rate. My concern is that they'll re-use a lot of these toned down assets for the single player mode which will end up looking really pap.

Either that or Bungie are simply overated and have become lazy in the knowledge that the franchise alone is enough to sell millions of copies.

                Maybe both.

How do you know that they're not focusing on the single-player ? Where did you hear/read this ?

"Finish The Fight" - Oh ****, we forgot about the single-player ><

                  I don't think so.

Christ, don't say that. Halo, to me, has always been about the single player experience and I've never really enjoyed it's multiplayer side for various reasons.

Does that mean that the PS3 is getting the FULL game, while 360 owners will have to download and pay for around 20% of it?

There are those that would argue that they have been making the MP portion of the game the priority since number 2........

Did you watch the documentary on the Halo 2 disc? It was fairly honest about how much Bungie screwed up the development on Halo 2 and how it was a mad panic to try and put the game together for launch. Hardly surprising it was so glitchy and unfinished looking.

I would have expected them to have it all together for Halo 3, especially with what is surely a near unlimited budget, but who knows? Something isn't right and it shows clear as day in the low end visuals. I saw a comparison on one of the major gaming sites of the vehicles in Halo 2 vs Halo 3. They're identical. Same poly count, same textures. They look a touch cleaner due to them running in 720p vs 480p, but not much.

Thing is though, both Bungie and MS know this is critic proof anyway so why put in all that overtime to create something truly amazing?

is there already any true "Next Gen" game engine out there?

i have played all critically acclaimed 360 and PS3 games but i haven't come across a single game that made me truly think i was experienceing something new, something that was not possible on Xbox or PS2, maybe except from some more eye candy.

take Gears of War for example. it's hard not to be impressed by Gears's visuals. neverthelss i was slightly disappointed by the lack of destructable scenery. some say it was not possible but for me this belongs into a "next gen" war shooter. well, let's see what Battlefield can add to this formula.

Strangehold and Area 51: Whatever It's Called both use Unreal 3 engine and feature lots of destructable scenery.

There's plenty of 'next-gen' (though really we should be referring to it as current gen now) engines out there. Epic and Crytek's work are just the most high profile.

Anyway, how did this thread get on to talk about Halo 3's graphical wowness? It looks fine. Not as technically gob smacking as Gears, but it has that distinctive environmental art style which Bungie characterised well in outdoor environments. Surely anything which harks back to the first Halo (Valhalla the most obvious example) is a good thing?
