SFII is really the only game I can remember 'cheating' at, and those were just the same player modes and the speed up modes. I do also remember the absolute rediculous things I would hear you have to do to `fight` Sheng Long.
I pity the kids trying play 10 matches against Bison without getting hit

I don't really like cheats anymore, as a kid I loved them.
Not in my experience, 'cheats' and various other controls for the game (camera controls, clipping plane, AI status etc.) were simply accessed from a debug screen which was simply accessed by clicking two buttons or similar. When the game was content complete and generally working, the debug screen came out and then working, separate cheats came back in to test the game in a final state. Before this stage the debug cheats often caused problems whereas the final versions have been tested first before going into a proper release. Purely my experience only though as mentioned above.

Best cheat system is Goldeneye for me - doesn't help you with game progression itself, gives you something to aim for and then gives you a laugh afterwards playing with the cheats. Infinite ammo, all guns, enemy damage to 1000%, enemy health to zero and all on facility formally known as 'the challenge - a random weapon was chosen and the player would have to complete the level using that weapon only. No idea why I spent so long on this with friends...

But yeah, I don't see the harm in it generally as long it is confined to solo play. That way ultimately you only can only affect your own experience of the title. Which is fair enough, if you buy a game and the option is there, you should be able to influence your time with the title any way you see fit.

And "cheats" such as those found in Timesplitters and Goldeneye can even add further enjoyment to title by acting as gameplay tweaks.

I do have issue with it the moment it affects the enjoyment of others. Admittedly, I can't think of any titles with official methods of cheating. But Datel and console mods which can grant access to those determined to screw with online titles have alot to answer for.

It'll be interesting to see how far the Marketplace and co. will allow devs to use the "official" cheating method of buying your way through games. So far it seems to be pretty well controlled, but I'm not sure if the lure of cash could put pay to that.

The first cheat that always springs to mind for me has to be IDKFA from Doom .

I think the invulnerability code in Doom is the most effective form of self-therapy out there, I used to unwind after really bad days at work by putting in Jaguar Doom, skipping to a level where I could get well and surrounded by biting nasty things, equipping the rocket launcher, and then just holding down the fire button until I got tired of the whoosh boom noises.

Oh, and any game that you have to play through from level 1 without saving (Sonic definitely pops to mind) definitely needs a level select cheat so you can play the later stages and get decent at them without spending half an hour to get there every time you want to practice.

I think the way Ninja Gaiden Black (easy mode) and Ikaruga (unlimited continues) worked was just about perfect, the "Well, at least you've TRIED to play the game, here's a bone for you" philosophy.
